Sacred Fools Theater Company is presenting the next installment of its ongoing theatre action We The People this Wednesday, October 10 at 8:00 pm. All proceeds will go to the organization Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción.
We The People is a bi-monthly, curated series of new works theatrically exploring - sometimes loudly, sometimes quietly, and everything in between - the concerns facing our country and world today.
In the months that followed the 2016 election, producers and creators of We The People, Kimberly Atkinson and Amir Levi, recognized an opportunity to meld art and activism.
"We both feel in a deep way that the community needs a place to artistically express their fear, their hope, their anger, and their ideas in the wake of so much political and social turmoil and we want their work to live past its single performance," explains Atkinson.
"We knew it had to be artistic activism that would raise awareness and connect people with other organizations that were making a difference," adds Levi.
Every other month, artists will receive a prompt and a deadline. The short pieces will then be curated into a night of theatre. The prompt for this upcoming evening of We The People is "Rights of Conscience."
We The People Theatre Action has thus far connected the Sacred Fools' audience with incredible non-profit organizations fighting for social and political justice, equal rights and protection, sensible gun laws and equity in the judicial system. The first installment of We The People took place on September 11, 2017, packing the Broadwater's Black Box Theater to full capacity with the proceeds from the show going to Tanenbaum, a secular, non-sectarian nonprofit that combats religious prejudice all over the world. Subsequent sold-out installments benefitted CARECEN, the Central American Resource Center, Peace Over Violence, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, and the National Bail Out Collective. We The People was recently featured by Footlights here.
October's installment of We The People features premiere works based on the prompt 'Rights of Conscience,' written by Elin Hampton, Steve Harper, Joe Jordan, Joshua R. Lamont, Carene Rose Mekertichyan, Stacy Patterson, Michael Robinson and Brittney S. Wheeler.
The readings will be directed by Kimberly Atkinson, Amir Levi and Marianne Davis and performed by Emet L. Block, Adriana Colón, Alexa Briana Crismon, Kristyn Evelyn, Ace Ahmed, Corey Klemow, David LM McIntyre, Tifanie McQueen, Keiana Richàrd and Marie-Francoise Theodore.
All proceeds for the October 10 event will go to Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción, a non-profit organization led for and by young professionals engaged in social change initiatives in Puerto Rico. MPA's Mission: "To empower a network of young change agents to generate effective and inclusive initiatives for Puerto Rico."
