Sacred Resistance, Vicki Juditz's evocative and original one-woman show, now playing at The Braid, home of Jewish Women's Theatre (JWT) in Santa Monica, has received a prestigious O! Ovation recommendation from LA Stage Alliance and will be extended to October 7 to give theater-goers more time to see one of this year's best performances and best plays.
Last week, LA Stage Alliance notified JWT of the O! Ovation recommendation, as judged by the body of Ovation voters who have attended and scored the production. According to the LA Stage Alliance, "This designation has placed it in the top 20% of all productions this season, based on the scores in its "Overall Production" category.
Sacred Resistance director, Susan Morgenstern said, "I am so thrilled that JWT's production has been Ovation Recommended. It is so gratifying that audiences - including Ovation voters - are appreciating Vicki Juditz' delicious writing as well as her uncanny ability to embody every single character she plays. As we extend again, I hope people who might not have discovered JWT quite yet will come and join us for a 75-minute journey that manages to be hilariously funny and ultimately deeply meaningful as well."
Ovation Awards are the only peer-judged theatre awards in Los Angeles, created to recognize excellence in theatrical performance in the Greater Los Angeles area. The Los Angeles Times has referred to the awards as ""the highest profile contest for local theatre."
When she learned of the prestigious recognition, Juditz was speechless, a rare state of being for the vivacious actress. "I am honored to perform for our audiences every time I set foot on stage. But this unexpected honor inspires me to reach even deeper to tell my story to those who have come to share my personal journey."
Juditz's story details her transformation from a girl who just wanted to have fun (and find a husband), to a committed crusader for social justice. Her path of discovery includes meetings with demanding rabbis, serious Bible study, making friends with elderly Jewish ladies who eat at Canter's, and meeting single men in sukkahs. Most influential is her trip back to to her German Lutheran roots, where she learns a great deal about her relatives and the other ordinary people who must have given tacit consent to the holocaust. Along the way, she learns about personal responsibility and how it must be exercised by each and every one of us each and every day.
And the critics love it! The Jewish Journal calls it a "complex story presented in a light, humorous way...Juditz confronts a series of problems, with a deadpan, earnest and slight wry delivery which makes (it) funny. The Santa Monica Daily Press calls it a "...touching, funny, poignant and completely satisfying one-woman show."
JWT's artistic director Ronda Spinak says, "While JWT and its actors have received numerous awards of excellence, this is our first O! Ovation recommendation. And it could not be more well deserved. Vicki puts her heart into her performance every night. She stands alone on stage for 75 minutes and the audience truly feels every aspect of her personal evolution."
Scared Resistance will be presented at The Braid, home of Jewish Women's Theatre, 2912 Colorado Ave., #102, Santa Monica 90404 until October 7. Tickets are $35. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit: www.jewishwomenstheatre.org.
