Today, August 15th, 2013, another entertainment legend, Miss Rose Marie, joins a remarkable sorority of fellow nonagenarian friends and colleagues including Carol Channing, Betty White, Angela Lansbury, and has chosen to celebrate by asking fans to help her TV co-star and dear friend, Doris Day, with donations to the "Doris Day Animal Foundation". "It is the finest organization that I know, taking care of God's finest creations - animals," remarks Miss Marie.
"I am so thrilled to be celebrating my friend
Rose Marie's 90th birthday. We had great fun working on the set of my television show. In fact, I've never had so much fun working, if you can call it that. We laughed all the time, sometimes much to the dismay of our director. But then, he would laugh too. It was then that I learned of
Rose Marie's great love for animals. She is a real pal and I love her dearly. I couldn't be more pleased that her fans might want to honor her birthday by making donations to the DDAF, Please know your donations will be put to good use in
Rose Marie's name. With my Love,"-
Doris Day
"Before the age of 3, I really didnt do much except hang around the house," commented Miss
Rose Marie, who has successfully conquered Vaudeville, Radio, Screen, Television, Cabaret, Vegas and the Broadway Stage. One of entertainment's longest and most fascinating careers began at the age of 3, with the billing of Baby
Rose Marie. She starred in several of the earliest talking films, beginning with a 1929 short, Baby
Rose Marie the Child Wonder, which was screened in theaters before feature films such as "The Jazz Singer." In 1946, when Las Vegas opened its first big-time casino hotel, The Flamingo,
Rose Marie was hired by Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegal as one of the headliners, along with
Jimmy Durante and
Xavier Cugat. She had a brief Broadway career in "Top Banana" with
Phil Silvers and in 1960, she accepted her first regular role on "My Sister Eileen." The next year, "The
Dick Van Dyke Show" premiered and
Rose Marie became a household name. After five seasons, she moved to "The
Doris Day Show." She is the only original member of the hit game show "Hollywood Squares" to have worked on all of its reincarnations and its hosts. She toured extensively with
Rosemary Clooney, Helen O'Connell &
Margaret Whiting in 4 Girls 4 and has released her best selling memoirs "Hold The Roses." In 2009, The Smithsonian Institution selected
Rose Marie as the first of nine legendary legends of stage and screen to have items from their careers inducted into the American History Museum.
Rose Marie has just become a regular voice for the animated series "Garfield," playing two roles as both bad and good witches - One of which will be wearing her trademark hair bow.
The
Doris Day Animal Foundation (DDAF) is a national, nonprofit 501(c)(3) Public Charity founded in 1978 as the
Doris Day Pet Foundation by legendary performer,
Doris Day, with a straightforward mission that continues to this day: to help animals and the people who love them. A life-long animal lover and advocate, Doris recognized that the animal welfare community in the 1970s was a sorely lacking landscape, and that through her own organization and celebrity status she could make a difference for the animals. When she initially founded the
Doris Day Pet Foundation, Doris focused on finding homes for the too many animals that were being destroyed simply because there weren't enough good homes. Her grassroots efforts resulted in Doris' personally rescuing hundreds of animals over the years. In addition to fostering animals at her own home, Doris and DDPF were leasing kennel space, providing for veterinary care, and finding loving forever homes for the increasing numbers of homeless pets with the help of a dedicated staff of volunteers.
