Conductor Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in two weekend programs at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Thursday through Saturday, November 8 through 10, at 8 pm, and Friday and Saturday, November 16 and 17, at 8 pm as well as Sunday, November 18, at 2 pm.
The first weekend’s program pairs Beethoven’s cheerful Eighth Symphony with Falla’s La vida breve, a gritty tale of a woman wronged. The rare complete performance of the two-act opera features mezzo-soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera as Salud; tenor Vicente Ombuena as Paco; mezzo-soprano Cristina Faus as La Abuela; bass-baritone Josep Miguel Ramón as Manuel; tenor Gustavo Peña as the Voice from the Forge; baritone Alfredo García as Tío Sarvaor; mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack as Carmela; Pedro Sanz as the Cantaor; guitarist Pablo Sáinz-Villegas and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. Núria Pomares dances flamenco as part of this rarely seen work.
In all three performances of the second weekend, Frühbeck de Burgos leads the LA Phil and cellist Lynn Harrell in Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C, one of the composer’s best-known concertos. The Saturday and Sunday programs also include Haydn’s Symphony No. 6, “Le matin,” and all three dates include Ravel’s Bolero and Frühbeck de Burgos’ orchestration of Albéniz’ Suite Española.
The Friday concert of the second weekend is part of the LA Phil’s Casual Fridays series, which features a shorter program, is presented without intermission and encourages audience members to attend in comfortable attire. These Casual Fridays concerts also feature a free TalkBack discussion with musicians held on stage after the performance and a chance to mingle with members of the orchestra in the Concert Hall Café.
