REDCAT (the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater) and the Skid Row Housing Trust co-present the first conversation event of REDCAT's new season, Where Hope Lives: How Design Can Transform Lives and Communities on October 6, 2009 at 7:30pm. This event has been made free to the public in order to allow for all members of the greater Los Angeles community to attend.

Innovative downtown Los Angeles developments such as the New Carver Apartments, by Michael Maltzan Architecture, and the Abbey Apartments, by Koning Eizenberg Architecture, have radically upended the prevalent notion of "low-income housing "--long synonymous with continuing poverty and blight. CalArts President Steven D. Lavine welcomes architects from Michael Maltzan Architecture, Koning Eizenberg Architecture, Killefer Flammang Architects and Lorcan O'Herlihy for an illuminating panel discussion on the role of design in realizing "supportive housing" for the homeless led by AIA LA President John E. Kaliski.

The term supportive housing refers to the pairing of affordable, attractive apartments for homeless individuals and families with key services and treatment, with the goal of substantially transforming the quality of life for individuals and communities. The discussion also touches on the pairing of architecture and community transformation with partners including Skid Row Housing Trust and the United Way of Greater Los Angeles.

The event at REDCAT is co-sponsored by AIA Los Angeles, ALOUD, United Way of Greater Los Angeles and the Urban Land Institute Los Angeles.

Where Hope Lives: How Design Can Transform Lives and Communities will take place at REDCAT, October 6, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is general admission. Reservations can be made through the REDCAT box office by calling 213-237-2800. Additional information available at www.redcat.org.

REDCAT, the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater, is located at the corner of W. 2nd and Hope Streets, inside the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex (631 West 2nd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012).
