REDCAT presents the West Coast premiere of Teatro en el Blanco's Diciembre, a politically charged and haunting drama about a near-future war in the Andes from the roiling imagination of Chilean writer-director Guillermo Calderón. Teatro en el Blanco's limited four-night engagement at REDCAT begins Wednesday, February 24, 2010 and runs through Saturday, February 27, 2010. Curtain for all performances is 8:30 pm.
" One of the most brazen plays of Latin American theater in recent years," (Festival di Internacional de Buenos Aires) Diciembre takes place in Santiago on Christmas Eve 2014 with the city besieged by Peruvian forces. Young soldier Jorge returns home on a 24-hour leave to celebrate the holiday with his pregnant twin sisters, who each have sharply different views on nationalism and the morality of war. One wants Jorge to defect, the other demands he return to the fight. Jorge, however, has his own take on the matter.
Smartly produced by his dynamic Santiago-based company Teatro en el Blanco ( Theater on Target ), Calderón's play strips away ostentatious theatrical conceit for us to hear clearly the terror knocking at the door. Peppered with surprising doses of pitch-black comedy, Diciembre is performed in Spanish with English supertitles and features Paula Zúñiga, Trinidad González and Jorge Becker.
The performances at REDCAT are funded in part with generous support from Judith O. and Robert E. Rubin and made possible in part by Performing Americas, a partnership between the National Performance Network (NPN) and the Network of Cultural Promoters of Latin America and the Caribbean (La RED) designed to increase artistic exchange in the Western Hemisphere.
