REDCAT Hosts Two Evenings of Wagnerian-Inspired Music and Discourse, 5/16, 5/30

REDCAT joins LA Opera and more than 50 Southern California arts and educational institutions for the 10-week Ring Festival LA. The Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater will host two provocative Wagnerian events held in conjunction with the 10-week city-wide festival. The first, 'Considering Wagner', an evening of contemporary music and film, is presented on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at 7:00 pm. The second, 'Myth, Wagner and the Human Brain', a colloquium featuring Peter Sellars, Bill Viola and Antonio Damasio, will take place on Sunday, May 30, 2010 at 3:00 pm.

More than 135 years after Richard Wagner completed the fourth and final opera of his epic Der Ring des Nibelungen, 'Considering Wagner', a night of contemporary music and film, unfolds in four acts that touch on different aspects of the composer's life, work and place in history: his musical and theatrical innovations, his über-expressionist concept of art, his preoccupation with Norse-Germanic mythology, his outsize personality, specific passages in his operas, and--not least--some of the ways in which creative practice has developed since his time.

Extending well over three hours with intermissions, the multilayered program features work by former Villa Aurora resident composers Peter Ablinger, Marko Ciciliani and Ulrich Krieger, additional compositions by Mark Menzies, Marc Sabat and Wolfgang von Schweinitz, and films by Peter Rappmund and Meason Wiley.

Then on May 30th REDCAT brings together acclaimed theater and opera director Peter Sellars, world-renowned visual artist Bill Viola, and Antonio Damasio, internationally renowned neurologist and neuroscientist as well as Director of the USC Brain and Creativity Institute for a spirited colloquium delving into 'Myth, Wagner and the Human Brain'.

 

Opened by CalArts in 2003, REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater) introduces diverse audiences, students and artists to the most influential developments in the arts from around the world, and gives artists in this region the creative support they need to achieve national and international stature. REDCAT is the newest partner in an international network of adventurous art and performance centers, which together are playing a vital role in the evolution of contemporary culture. REDCAT is a center for experimentation, discovery and lively civic discourse.
