In the final Actors Fund Musical Monday of the year, the incredible Sam Harris came close to blowing the roof off of the Pantages Theatre! In a show that mixed pop and Broadway music, his voice soared to the rafters - with some highlights being "Don't Rain on My Parade," "I'm Changing," and "Bridge Over Troubled Waters," and his signature arrangement of "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This/Move On." In a tribute to Al Jolson, he belted out "RockabyeYour Baby" asking the sound man to turn off the microphone so he could do it just like Jolson must have done it and his voice filled the space and resonated through the theatre! He ended with a poignant quiet rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
Between songs - he really doesn't do patter as much as hilarious stand-up comedy - so the crowd fell in love with him very quickly! In an 80 minute show he hit on every emotion, and left the crowd cheering and on their feet. His musical Director, who also sings backup, Todd Schroeder, was a welcome and talented addition to a perfect evening.
Attendees included Florence Henderson, Bruce Vilanch, Nancy Dussault, Bill Brochtrup, Valarie Pettiford (who wowed the crowd last December at the same venue), Mr. Blackwell, Judy Tenuta, Cathy Silvers, Henry Polic, Mary Jo Catlett and chart topping recording artist DeLyn.The Actors Fund (www.actorsfund.org) is a nationwide human services organization that helps all professionals - both performers and those behind the scenes - in performing arts and entertainment.
