Musical Theatre Guild, the winner of the Los Angeles Drama Critic's Circle Margaret Harford Award for sustained excellence in the theatre, continued their 2015-2016 season with the Richard Rodgers, Stephen Sondheim andArthur Laurents 1965 musical DO I HEAR A WALTZ? The one-night-only concert took place at Glendale's historic Alex Theatre on Sunday, November 15 at 7:00 PM. Scroll down for photos from the evening!
Based on Laurents' play The Time of the Cuckoo, DO I HEAR A WALZ? follows American spinster Leona Samish on her journey to Venice, Italy where she is searching for the romance she's been waiting for all her life. She finds it, but vacations and romances don't always turn out the way you hope. The musical marks Rodgers' first score after Hammerstein's death and the only time he wrote with Sondheim. Although the show, and in particular the collaboration, has historically been noted as "problematic", the truly incredible score, created by two masters of the genre, survives. The Pasadena Playhouse presented a well-received and slightly retooled revival in 2001.
DO I HEAR A WALTZ? starred Kim Huber as Leona with fellow MTG company members Lindsey Alley, Eileen Barnett,Doug Carfrae, Zachary Ford, Marsha Kramer, Ashley Fox Linton and guest artists David Crane, Jude Mason and Robert Yacko in other featured roles. DO I HEAR A WALTZ? was directed by Richard Israel with musical direction by Jennifer Lin, choreography by John Todd and was under the production supervision of Roy Leake, Jr..
