In an unprecedented move, PCPA will present its spring musical Fiddler on the Roof at the Clark Center in Arroyo Grande from April 25 to May 12, 2013.
With the Marian Theatre undergoing a major renovation, PCPA needed a venue large enough to stage a full scale musical production.
Fiddler on the Roof, a gem from Broadway's Golden Age of musicals, is a celebration of life and its challenges. Trying to balance life - like a fiddler on a roof - Tevye attempts to hold onto his traditions despite sweeping social change that is threatening his town's very existence.
Following its run in Arroyo Grande,
Fiddler on the Roof will transfer to the Solvang Festival Theater to launch PCPA's summer season and play from June 13 through July 6.
The musical will be directed by Roger DeLaurier and features resident equity artist
Erik Stein as Tevye the dairyman who has respectful debates with the God. DeLaurier said that
Fiddler appeals to our core values and addresses the collision of generational expectations and exasperations.
Fiddler on the Roof first appeared on Broadway in 1964 and swept the Tony's with nine "Best" awards including Best Musical for a score that features "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "If I were a Rich Man," "Sunrise, Sunset," and "Do You Love Me."
The film adaptation was released in 1971 and scored three Oscars including Best Score Adaptation for
John Williams. It also won the Golden Globe for Best Picture.
PCPA's creative team includes choreography by
Michael Jenkinson, musical direction by
Callum Morris, scenic design by De
Anne Kennedy, costume design by Frederick P. Deeben, lighting design by Jennifer 'Z' Zornow, sound design by Elisabeth Rebel and stage management by Christine Collins*.
