The Orange County Playwrights Alliance will bring four new one-act plays to the beautiful ocean-view Newport Theatre Arts Center on Sunday, July 8. These four staged readings of plays center on people revealing or realizing their true selves - either in front of each other, or in front of us. Playwrights Lorin Howard, John Lane, Joni Ravenna and Jordan R. Young have been produced accross America.
Norma and Dave Go to the Travelodge by Lorin Howard (Long Beach) - In an effort to improve their sagging relationship, two Hollywood writers settle into a cheap motel for a clandestine tryst, but their role-playing is interrupted by their fear of intimacy and their klutziness. Featuring RoxAnne Martinez and Bob Fetes. Directed by Geoffrey Gread.
Bartender by John Lane (Stanton) - A friend, a lover, an armchair psychologist, a shoulder to cry on ... Dennis is all this and more to the women who stay at the five-diamond Vanguard Hotel. As he goes to bed with them, it's all very casual and no strings ... but is it becoming dangerously addictive? And will his conscience catch up with him? Directed by Terry Winkler.
Beethoven and Misfortune Cookies, or The Kabin Thomas Story by Joni Ravenna (Corona Del Mar) in collaboration with Kabin Thomas & Ernest Harden, Jr. - Fired after 11 years of teaching at the University of Arkansas for using profanity in class, a former music professor looks back at his Detroit upbringing as he lands in Hollywood and auditions for a reality show. Featuring Ernest Harden, Jr. (J. Edgar, White Men Can't Jump, The Jeffersons). Directed by T.J. Castronova (Tales from the Darkside).
Perception by Jordan R. Young (Orange) - A portrait comes to life at Madrid's Museo del Prado as a 4-foot-tall court jester from the 17th century recalls how the legendary artist Diego Velasquez taught him the art of self-respect. Directed by Jenni Dillon.
