Disney's magical stage musical "Aladdin Jr." comes to the Norris Theatre for nine performances, August 5-14. Based on the beloved animated film, the production will take audiences on an enchanted magic carpet ride to Agrabah with such favorite characters as Aladdin, Jasmine, Jafar, Iago, and, of course, the wise-cracking blue Genie. It features an Academy Award-winning score including such songs as "A Whole New World" and "Friend Like Me." The professional- level production is presented by the Norris Center for the Performing Arts' highly-acclaimed education department and features actors through age 18.
The Broadway-style musical brings to life the tale of Aladdin, with all the mystery, music and comic mayhem that made it one of Disney's most popular movies. Its captivating story follows the adventures a street-wise commoner who finds a magic lamp in a cave of wonders and unleashes a larger-than-life Genie who grants him three wishes. Aladdin falls in love with the Sultan of Agrabah's beautiful daughter, Princess Jasmine, but with help from Genie, he must battle the diabolical, power-hungry Jafar to save the kingdom and win the princess's heart.
The show retains the fun-loving spirit of the original Disney movie, and includes all the same unforgettable songs featuring music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice.
"With the professional sets, costumes and dazzling dance numbers, 'Aladdin' will be a feast for the eyes and ears and a magical treat for the entire family," says James Gruessing, executive director of the Norris Center of the Performing Arts, and director of the production. "However, the real heart of this entertaining musical is the timeless messages about the power of friendship and the importance of staying true to oneself."
The production is choreographed by Lori Coulis, and Tom Griffin serves as musical director. "Disney's Aladdin, Jr." is sponsored by Terranea Resort, Clix Portrait Studios and Redondo Van & Storage and is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.
The cast of 40 talented student actors features Hayden Butler as Aladdin, Chelsea Parker as Jasmine, Sofie Puchley as Genie, Justin Denniger as Jafar, Ellie Gruen as Iago, Cameron Boyer as Razoul and Max Havas as the Sultan.
