New Village Arts Presents, Not-So-Silent Movie Night, and INTO THE WOODS, et al this Season

New Village Arts on 2787 State St., Carlsbad, California, 92008, will have several events during its 10th season, including hosting James Harman and Nathan James, holding a Not-So-Silent Movie Night, and presenting productions of INTO THE WOODS, and AS YOU LIKE IT.

Music at NVA welcomes James Harman, one-of-a-kind song writer, producer, musician, showman, vocalist and internationally known bluesman; and Nathan James, winner of the 2007 Memphis International Blues Challenge and heard on XM/Sirius radio, to the 100-seat New Village Arts Theatre. Just back from their European tour, the James boys will bring world class blues to the Village. Featuring Troy Sandow on bass, James Michael Tempo playing hundreds of pieces of African percussion, and more! This special concert begins at 8pm Aug. 28th and tickets are just $15.

New Village Arts also presents the madcap Not-So-Silent Movie Night with acclaimed sound effects man and musician Scott Paulson and the Teeny-Tiny Pit Orchestra. See Scott in his most madcap mood at New Village Arts Theatre on Thursday, August 26 at 8:00 p.m. as he performs his favorite music from the 1900's, 1910's and 1920's while classic silent films roll.

Silent films to be shown in this one-night festival at NVA include:

  • One of the earliest filmings of THE WIZARD OF OZ
  • A 1910 episode from THE HAZARDS OF HELEN: Helen stops the run-away train and saves many lives!
  • Afascinating stop-action animation film of the era
  • Atelling surreal look at the Hollywood star machine in the early 1900's
  • An early classic feline cartoon pre-dating Felix the Cat
  • An artful experimental film of the era that the audience will direct musically with glow- in-the dark conductor batons - yes, you can take those magical conducting batons home!

NVA also put together an all-star team of for this remarkable production of INTO THE WOODS including:

  • James Vasquez "the best young director in San Diego" according to The San Diego Union Tribune
  • Co-musical direction by Elan McMahan and Charlie Reuter
  • New Village Arts Ensemble members Sandra Ellis-Troy and Manny Fernandes
  • Randall Dodge and Steve Gunderson (Two of the best musical theatre actors in San Diego)
  • Internationally known cabaret star Devlin as The Witch!

New Village Arts is partnering with Moonlight Cultural Foundation to revisit the first Shakespeare we ever produced! What if, moments after meeting the love of your life, you were banished from your home? That's what happens to Shakespeare's greatest heroine, Rosalind, in AS YOU LIKE IT. Her journey and the fates of those around her are captured in this magical, comedic romp in the Forest of Arden.
