New Storytelling Event Celebrates Jews Of All Colors Image

Looking through a photo album never fails to evoke memories and make us want to tell the stories behind the pictures. NEXT at the Braid (NEXT), Jewish Women's Theater's Next Gen Emerging Artists, Jews of Color, and IKAR are hosting "United Colors of Jews-A Storytelling Event" to give members of the community an opportunity to share these stories and to meet their "multicultural mispacha" on Wednesday, January 31 at 7:30 pm at The Braid, 2912 Colorado Ave. #102, Santa Monica 90404.

Abbe Meryl Feder, NEXT's producer, said "Jewish people come from everywhere and many are descendants of parents of mixed heritage families. Current events have brought diversity to the forefront, and many people from diverse backgrounds want to share their histories."

The History of Jewish Diversity reports that 20% of the Jewish population in the United States is African American, Asian, Latino, Sephardic, Mizrachi and mixed race. Yet, it is sometimes difficult to locate others who share this unique heritage. JWT is giving everyone a chance to bring their precious photos to the event to bridge the cultural gap.

Joshua Silverman, a local artist of mixed heritage, will MC the event. Members of Jews of Color will share their photos and invite members of the audience to join in, if they like. Everyone who purchases a ticket may also submit a meaningful photo and a few lines of a story. Two lucky people will be invited to share their own stories with the audience.

"It will be a cozy evening, with the feeling of stories around a campfire," Feder says. "We will explore race within our community in a safe and supportive space. We know everyone will learn something new and meet some new friends."

"United Colors of Jews" will take place on Wednesday, January 31 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are just $10 and can be purchased on the "events" tab under www.jewishwomenstheatre.org.
