Both sides of the Atlantic Ocean are represented in the upcoming 2009/10 Winter Season presented by Moonlight Stage Productions at the Avo Playhouse, located at 303 Main Street in Downtown Vista. The season includes Larry Shue's award-winning comedy "The Foreigner," November 12 through 29; the "star-spangled" musical "Swingtime Canteen," January 28 through February 21; and the French comedy "Ring Round the Moon," by Jean Anouilh and adapted by Christopher Fry, which runs March 4 through 21. Season packages for the 2009/10 Winter Season are on sale beginning September 19, and single tickets are available beginning October 10 at the VisTix Ticket Office, 600 Eucalyptus Avenue, or by calling (760) 724-2110.

Set in a picturesque fishing lodge in Georgia, "The Foreigner" was first presented at the Avo Playhouse in 1997. This popular romp, written by American playwright Larry Shue, won two Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards as Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production in 1984. The story follows Englishman Charlie Baker, an out-of-place visitor to Georgia, whose shyness keeps him tongue-tied. His fellow Brit tries to cover by telling the locals that Charlie can't understand English. What follows is a comic brew of secrets, resulting in hilarious mayhem.

The next production, "Swingtime Canteen," takes audiences across the Atlantic to 1940's England, where five women leave Hollywood behind to entertain the US troops in war-torn London. Not the standard nostalgia-fest, this musical is an evocative balancing act of music, comedy, parody and sentiment. Songs include "Don't Fence Me In," "I'll Be Seeing You," and "Sentimental Journey."

Next stop is France for Jean Anouilh's enchanting comedy "Ring Round the Moon," adapted by British playwright Christopher Fry and directed by Jason Heil. Witty, charming and madcap, the play is set at a glamorous French society dance, played out under the dazzling lights of a winter garden, where mistaken identities and affairs of the heart take center stage.

Performance times are Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m. Single tickets will go on sale beginning October 10 and are $29 for adults, with discounts for seniors, students, military personnel and groups of 20 or more. Single tickets will be available for purchase in person at VisTix Ticket Office, by phone at (760) 724-2110, or online at www.vistixonline.com.

The 2009/10 Moonlight at the Avo Playhouse Winter Season is produced by Moonlight Stage Productions and the City of Vista. Additional funding is made possible by the Moonlight Cultural Foundation, a non-profit organization that benefits the performing arts in North County. For more information call (760) 630-7650.
