Sterling's Upstairs at Vitello's restaurant in Studio City celebrated their 8th anniversary with a cool sense of chic cabaret as Maura M. Knowles (
Bare) flew through stage classics to a crowded house. Over the last eight months, Sterling's has provided Los Angeles a splendid supper-club atmosphere unmatched in this sprawling city.
Knowles, who is both actress and singer, mixed up the evening with rather candid reflections as she paid tribute to the likes of
Stephen Sondheim, George Gershwin and Rodgers and Hart. An able singer, Knowles kept the mood light and humorous with a few enjoyable medleys including a travelogue of sorts throwing in Broadway melodies from "Herman's Hideaway" to "Oklahoma," keeping patrons feet tapping and mood high.
The Upstairs venue provides for a romantic getaway, and Knowles put a spin on the nearly Valentine's Day performance with her show
Life's Little Ironies… A Collection of My Best Intentions, under the direction of Todd Nielsen and musical direction by Brett Ryback.
Aside from her turn in the rock musical Bare, Knowles has been in Francis Ford Coppoa's "Gidget" and Big Girl Little World at the International Fringe Festival in New York.
With the continuing effort of Michael Sterling, this club is sure to continue on its path of monthly pleasures, with Emily Allerton slated for Saturday March 10, 2007.
