Distinguished vocalist, recording artist and interpreter of the Great American Songbook Martha Lorin will appear at Sterling's Upstairs at The Federal Sunday May 26 accompanied by legendary musical director Paul Smith for an evening of lush standards, it was announced today by producer Michael Sterling and co-producer Ralph Lampkin, Jr. of the Lampkin Music Group in Chicago.

Heavily influenced by the late, great Ruth Etting, Martha Lorin has said that jazz is the only music field that allows her to openly express her feelings and gives her a platform to grow technically and vocally. She is constantly exploring the jazz landscape with a spirit of lifting and broadening her musical acumen. Her explorations have presented the opportunity to work with a wide range of world class musicians, including Benny Green, Richard Wyands, Harvie S., Eddie Marshall, Monty Budwig, Leon Joyce, Butch Miles, Mark Isham, and now (again) with Paul Smith...to name but a few. New York's Birdland and Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall are among the many nightclubs across the country where Ms. Lorin has appeared. During her career, she has recorded six very popular and critically acclaimed CD's, including the duet CD with Paul Smith, Celebrating the music of Ella Fitzgerald. Paul was Ella's musical director for 28n years.

Paul Smith has performed in various genres of jazz, most typically bebop. However, he has also performed in cool jazz, swing music. After working in concert with such bandleaders as Les Paul and Tommy Dorsey, Mr. Smith moved to Los Angeles to become a studio musician. He has since recorded frequently both with his trios and as a soloist. In addition, he is featured on work of artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Anita O'Day, Buddy DeFranco, Louie Bellson, Steve Allen, Stan Kenton, Mel Tormé and many others. Between 1956 and 1978, Mr. Smith was active as a conductor and pianist for Ella Fitzgerald. Smith has also authored a number of educational books and CDs, most of which focus on explaining his particular approach to jazz piano. He has been married for more than 50 years to singer and pianist Annette Warren, with whom he often appears and records.

Continuing its nearly 7 year reign as the most critically acclaimed, award-winning supper club of its kind in the greater Los Angeles area dedicated to presenting the best of Broadway performers and Nightclub Artists in concert, Sterling's Upstairs at The Federal is located at 5303 Lankershim Blvd. (at Weddington Street) in North Hollywood, California's trendy NoHo Arts Disctrict.
