The Manhattan Transfer is a jazz vocal group founded in 1969 that dominated music charts for years over many different genres including a capella, vocalese, swing, standards, Brazilian jazz, rhythm and blues, and pop music.
There have been two celebrated editions of the Manhattan Transfer. The first group consisted of
Tim Hauser, Erin Dickins,
Marty Nelson, Pat Rosalia, and
Gene Pistilli. The second version of the group, formed in 1972, consisted of Hauser,
Alan Paul,
Janis Siegel, and Laurel Massé (replaced by
Cheryl Bentyne in 1979). The group's long-time pianist,
Yaron Gershovsky, accompanied the group on tour and served as music director.
Trist Curless from the Los
Angeles a cappella group m-pact became a permanent member in October 2014 following Hauser's death.
Award-winning jazz vocalist and founding member, renowned chef and author, Erin Dickins, has performed or recorded with many well-known artists including:
James Taylor,
Leonard Cohen, Gregg Allman, The Talking Heads,
Roberta Flack,
Yoko Ono and
James Brown. As a solo artist, Dickins captivates audiences with a stunning voice and upbeat humor. Dickins' is noted style, literally adding a little sizzle to her swing often performing "Gourmet Concerts," where she combines her toe-tapping tunes with mouthwatering morsales. Her new CD Vignettes will be available on Nov 5th following a launch performance at Vitellos in Studio City.
On her latest CD, Vignettes, Erin has joined with notable great musician for each song. Musicians such as
David Friedman (vibes) on the Portuguese classic, O Grande Amor,
Elliott Randall (Steely Dan guitarist) on Wonderful World, John Lissauer (
Leonard Cohen Producer), on Came So Far For Beauty, piano great Rob Mounsy joins Erin on A Bicyclette, A.J. Today Erin lives with her husband live in an 1810 renovated farmhouse that includes her recording studio. She grew up riding and showing horses - jumpers and hunters and today she is a huge dog lover and animal rights activist, in addition to her efforts teaching kids through music.
