The award-winning Musical Theatre Guild, a company of professional performers who present concert-staged readings of seldom seen musicals, will continue its 14th season celebrating musicals from the 1960's with IRMA LA DOUCE. The opening performance will take place on Monday, April 19, 2010 at 7:30 PM at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale. A second and final performance will occur on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at 3:00 PM at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza's Janet and Ray Scherr Forum Theatre.
Set in Paris, this French and West End import revolves around Irma, a carefree Montmartre streetwalker whose life is turned upside down when she falls in love with Nestor le Fripé, a poor law student, who in order to keep her for himself, assumes the disguise of a rich older man. Although the film version unbelievably eliminated the songs, the original is much more fun, especially with the joyous, atmospheric score by
Marguerite Monnot. IRMA LA DOUCE opened on Broadway in 1960, was nominated for seven Tony Awards and ran for 524 performances.
In the starring roles of Irma and Nestor are
Robin deLano and
Dan Callaway. In other leading roles are Chuck Bergman, Christopher Carothers,
Steven Hack,
Joe Hart,
Michael Kostroff, Brandon Michael Perkins and
Jeffrey Polk. Also featured are
David Holmes,
Roy Leake, Jr., John Massey, Jr.,
Barry Pearl and reprising his role from the original Broadway production;
Rudy Tronto. IRMA LA DOUCE will be directed and choreographed by Roger Castellano with musical direction by Ron Colvard.
In addition, at the April 19 performance, the Alex Theatre courtyard will be transformed into a Parisian Boulevard to host Musical Theatre Guild's bi-annual silent auction. Bid on amazing theatre memorabilia, art, spa, restaurant and theatre packages all to support MTG programming and youth outreach.
