Gala Fundraiser and Celebrity Reading of Orson Welles' 1936 "Vodou Macbeth", an adaption of Shakespeare's "Macbeth", set in Haiti. Harry Lennix (Titus Andronicus, The Matrix, Ray) will be reading the title role, with Lorraine Toussaint (Friday Night Lights, Dangerous Minds, Saving Grace) as Lady Macbeth, directed by Gregg T. Daniel. Sunday, July 10 at 3 p.m., at the Lost Studio Theatre in Los Angeles.
In 1936, theatrical history was made when Orson Welles mounted a production of Shakespeare's Macbeth transplanted to the island of Haiti. With the use of live drums, special effects and an all black cast, the production mesmerized audiences as many rushed uptown to Harlem to see the production. The production was a critical success and toured extensively. "Vodou" Macbeth also marks one of the first times, African American actors were used in roles other than musicals.
Lower Depth Theatre Ensemble received critical acclaim and a successful run of THREE SISTERS AFTER CHEKHOV in 2010. The company is looking to raise $45,000 towards their next season of plays.
This intimate afternoon will include a silent auction with amazing prizes, sumptuous food and desserts, and wine/beverages.
