Little Fish Theatre is excited to announce the next show of its 2015 season, Private Eyes, by Steven Dietz. A highly-layered and intriguing play that explores common, and yet seldom-discussed, aspects of relationships. It is a fascinating examination of the darker, indefinable and more taboo feelings associated with love, mistrust and temptation. But when is the line crossed, and what do we do when it is? It is a playful and often farcical examination of what is so often played as a heavy subject.
Matthew and Lisa, a married couple, find themselves rehearsing together for a play about infidelity. But when director Adrian brings temptation and jealousy into the mix, things begin to spiral. Are Lisa and Adrian having an affair? Is Matthew insecure and over-imaginative? That's what Matthew's therapist, Frank, is trying to discern. Into the mix comes the mysterious and captivating Cory, who may or may not be as she appears. Who is she? And what is her role in this very intimate entanglement?
Speaking of the play, Dietz has been quoted as saying, "I have tried to write about my own fascination with the high-wire act known as 'an affair': the insidious power of suspicion, the delicious fever of deception...and the accompanying sobriety of truth. For beneath the headlines of our heartache lies something quieter, simpler: fear of loss. The failure of love to answer its own promise. The low-level panic of two people, alone, looking into each others eyes, with nowhere to run."
"'Private Eyes' is my favorite kind of comedy: The laughs are right out in the open, as the characters twist themselves into knots to safeguard their little secrets; but...there's something very real and true and human - and often quite moving - at the core of it all. The play asks us to consider: What sorts of calamities do we invite into our lives once we allow dishonesty to creep into our closest relationships? The play is a dizzying thrill ride; one in which 'reality' is strictly a moving target." Perloff is known for his performance as an actor in some of Little Fish's most popular productions (Taking Sides, Chapter Two, Time Stands Still). He also directed Deathtrap and for Pick of the Vine in previous seasons.
Audiences will recognize Little Fish Company favorite Bill Wolski in the role of Matthew (Tryst, Pick of The Vine, Oh,Baby!)
Kristin Towers-Rowles as Lisa (Panache, Steel Magnolias) and
Kyla Schoer as Cory (Melville Boys). They are joined by exciting talent new to Little Fish Theatre: Allen Barstow as Adrian and Kim Estes in the role of Frank.
