Starting this January, The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute will officially launch its Musicals of Broadway Series.  The new class, aimed at children and teenagers, is part of the school's established Young Actors at Strasberg program.

The Musicals of Broadway Series immerses students in the exciting world of musical theatre.  With an emphasis on craft over production, students participating in the class will sharpen their acting techniques, master song lyrics and learn original choreography.  The 12-week program culminates in a black box performance at the school's Marilyn Monroe Theatre.

The program had a soft launch this fall with the students working on a production of Once on This Island, which will be performed at the Marilyn Monroe Theatre in mid-December.  The class is taught by Broadway veterans Wendy Rosoff and Troy Rintala, who have also both performed in national & European tours.  An audition and interview is required for company placement and casting purposes.

In addition to the Musicals of Broadway Series, their world-renowned acting classes continue to be offered in the Young Actors at Strasberg program, which divides students into three age groups.

Program 1 (Grades 2-5): The youngest students in this program combine acting exercises with movement, music and art teaching them the core skills needed in the performing arts.    Students will learn to trust their instincts while developing their imagination and expressiveness throughout the program.

Program 2 (Grades 5-8):  For middle school students, this acting program introduces Method exercises to help them concentrate and express themselves with greater confidence and truth.  Students will apply their teachings to scene work while improvisation is used to stimulate their imagination.  Electives for this age group include Theatre Dance, Broadway Songs, Comic Improv, Movement, Mime & Mask, and Poetry Slam.

Program 3 (Grades 9-12): This program delves into the Method technique in greater depth as concentration, relaxation and sense memory exercises are applied to improvisations, monologues and scene work.  The On-Camera elective provides teens with the technical skills and experience required to perform on screen.  Scenes from television and film, as well as PSA's, are rehearsed, recorded and played back to the students for immediate feedback.

Actors who studied in the Young Actors at Strasberg program include Angelina Jolie, Drew Barrymore, Claire Danes, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Sienna Miller.

The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute is currently accepting applications for their 2011 sessions.  All classes take place on Saturdays.  To view the current schedule visit www.strasberg.com.
