Laurie Metcalf, French Stewart and Maile Flanagan reprise their original roles in Justin Tanner's hit comedy. Voice Lessons tells the story of the unlikely romance between a deluded community theatre actress and the overeducated vocal coach she hires to make her a star. Directed by Bart DeLorenzo.
Laurie Metcalf (Virginia) is a member of Steppenwolf Theater Company, now in it's 34th season, and is also a long-time fan of Mr. Tanner. She just completed a run of
The Other Place, by
Sharr White, at MCC in New York, and will appear at London's Apollo Theater in 2012 in
Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night.
French Stewart (Nate) has been a member of
Justin Tanner's company for over twenty years. Previous Tanner plays include Zombie Attack, Pot Mom and Space Therapy. He starred in last year's
Matthew Modine Saves the Alpacas, by Blair Singer, at the
Geffen Playhouse, and, most recently, in Watson, at Sacred Fools, where he is a proud member.
Maile Flanagan (Sheryl) was most recently heard in the film, Rango. Other credits include the up-coming film, Transformers 3, 500 Days of Summer, Yes Man, Ice Age 3, Evan Almighty, Phone Booth, The Class, The Station Agent, Grey's Anatomy, etc., and many voiceovers, including portraying a ninja named Narutu. She won an Emmy for Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks in 2006, and had another Emmy nomination for the same series in 2007. She is currently appearing at the Odyssey Theatre in
Justin Tanner's new comedy, Day Drinkers.
Justin Tanner (Playwright) has written 20 produced plays including Procreation, Space Therapy, Oklahomo, and Wife Swappers. He has written, directed, photographed and edited 24 chapters of his new web show, Ave 43, available on YouTube, and is currently developing a musical one-man stage show with rock legend Michael Des Barres. He is grateful to Gary Guidinger and Linda Toliver for continuing to produce his work, and to the cast of VOICE LESSONS for their immense talent and infinite patience. His new, critically acclaimed comedy, Day Drinkers, is currently enjoying an extended run at the Odyssey Theatre.
Bart DeLorenzo (Director) is the founding Artistic Director of the Evidence Room theater where he has directed many plays over many years, as well as productions with South Coast Rep, the Geffen, and CTG, among others. Most recently he directed Legacy of Light at the
Cleveland Playhouse and King Lear with the Antaeus Company,
Len Jenkin's Margo Veil with the Evidence Room ensemble at the Odyssey and currently
Justin Tanner's Day Drinkers.
LINDA TOLIVER and GARY GUIDINGER (Producers) have been producing the work of Los Angeles writers and actors for over two decades. During their 22 years at the Zephyr Theatre, which they ran until 2010, they brought in the solo work of Lynn Manning, Luis Alfaro,
Michael Kearns,
Amy Hill, Eric Trules,
Burke Byrnes and Edie McClurg, among others. They produced the world premieres of
Justin Tanner's VOICE LESSONS, (Los Angeles and NY productions), Procreation and Space Therapy, as well as revivals of his Teen Girl and Wife Swappers. Other favorites include The Last Session and The Big Voice: God or Merman?, by
Jim Brochu and
Steve Schalchlin (both plays went on to extended runs in NY), a very special production of The Caretaker, starring
Robert Mandan, and the annual Christmas romp, Bob's Holiday Office Party. They were associate producers on Larry Biederman's sold-out production of La Ronde at the 2009 NY International Fringe Festival;
Del Shores' Southern Baptist Sissies, with
Leslie Jordan,
Dale Dickey and
Delta Burke, The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife, with
Beth Grant, and Sordid Lives, which later became the popular LOGO TV series. Earlier this year they produced the sold-out run of Elliot Shoenman's AfterMath, starring
Annie Potts, at the Odyssey and Matrix Theatres, and are currently presenting
Justin Tanner's newest comedy, Day Drinkers, at the Odyssey Theatre in West LA.
