Temptation. Heartbreak. Redemption. These are all words that evoke some of the chief themes of "The Devil You Know," a new rhythm & blues musical being brought to the stage this coming spring, uniquely by a trio of Los Angeles actors consisting of Larry Poindexter, David Carey Foster and Michael Nicklin.
Raw, simple and emotionally moving, "The Devil You Know" is the ultimate modern anti-hero story of redemption woven among a sonic backdrop of soul and rhythm & blues that is currently underserved in the world of theatre. The music will get into each audience's bones carrying them along on a unique and relatable journey.
Through story narrative, character development and dramatic structure, both the book and libretto of "The Devil You Know" will present a truly different and remarkable piece of work that is both heartfelt and contemporary, both universally appealing and intriguing in its back-story. Lyrics woven seamlessly into each song move the story forward in a non-formulaic manner, resulting in dramatic depth and intensity as each song is performed live for audiences.
Co-author and composer of "The Devil You Know," Poindexter is the life-force and beating heart behind the new musical. With an acting and producing career that spans over 30 years, Poindexter has been seen in literally hundreds of hours of television, nearly 50 movies and countless stage plays including "S.W.A.T," "17 Again" and "Reefer Madness." Music has always been the heart and soul behind his art. In addition to the score of "The Devil You Know," he has composed over 200 songs with many successfully placed in a number of TV episodes and films, and is a gifted singer and proficient master of multiple instruments. He was exposed to the entertainment business at a young age, as he is the son of Tony-winning, Broadway lighting and set designer H.R. Poindexter.
Foster, the show's co-creator, is bringing his extensive acting, singing and writing experience to the production. Foster has acted in numerous stage, TV and film productions including "The Mentalist," "Dexter," "Orson's Shadow" at Artists Repertory Theatre, "Inventing Van Gogh" at PCPA Theatrefest, and "The Woman in Black" at the Old Lyric Repertory. He has produced plays for the Colony Theatre, Central Coast Repertory, and Nottingham Players, and has a role in the upcoming film, Get A Job, a comedy starring three-time Emmy winner, Bryan Cranston.
Nicklin is currently acting as consulting producer for the musical, bringing over three decades of entrepreneurial and theatrical experience to "The Devil You Know," having produced or consulted for film and television as well as myriad electronic media projects, and more than 100 live events. He is as comfortable behind the camera as he is in front of it, having appeared in more than 30 short and independent feature films, as well as numerous commercials and web series. He is a fervent supporter of independent projects from initial idea to executable plan by providing professional consultation, end-to-end project management, fundraising leadership, and stakeholder relations to monetize and create the most marketable products.
