La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts concludes its 2012-13 Programs for Young Audiencesseries with the incredible whimsy of Fred Garbo's Inflatable Theater Company. This 60-minute, wildly entertaining show is recommended for audiences ages 4 and up. Performances are Sunday, May 19, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Fast-paced, energetic, universally engaging and theatrically clever, Fred Garbo's Inflatable Theater Co. has won the praise and affection of audiences worldwide. They have been seen on the Late Show with
David Letterman, at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., on Broadway at the New Victory Theater and on stage and television around the world.
The show begins when a ten-foot cylinder slithers onto the stage and implodes, and before long the entire audience is playing catch with gigantic inflatable props! The big blow-up shapes shimmer, balloon, deflate, and bounce in a rainbow of colors. Fred Garbo and Daielma Santos inhabit this enchanting world with tremendous aplomb and skill.
Suddenly, the globulating red cube takes on a life of its own, rolling, gliding, tumbling in synch to the music, right up to the edge of the stage. The audience gasps, and the big block teeters dramatically on the brink, quaking and bulging and changing shape, then amazing everybody with a hilarious exit. Now the lovely ballerina dances a can-can, but her skirt starts to grow longer and longer, becoming a ball gown, then a balloon engulfing her, finally spiriting her away. Garbo and Santos mesmerize their audience with imaginative imagery and artistic foolishness.
FRED GARBO got paid for doing a card trick in 1974, and has been a professional performer ever since. On
Sesame Street, he was the acrobat inside Barkley the Dog. On Broadway, he was the chief juggler in the musical Barnum. He toured Europe, Hong Kong and Australia with the Obie Award-winning
Foolsfire, with
Bob Berky and
Michael Moschen. Whether tumbling for the New York City Opera at Lincoln Center or dancing with MOMIX in Brazil, Fred brings a gymnast's timing and an actor's presence to his Inflatable Theater Co. He even was featured on
David Letterman's
Late Night. Fred Garbo continues to astound
and tickle audiences with his pop-action inflatables and hilarious stage presence. For more than two decades he has been inventing inflatables with artist/builder George York. Fred has trained and performed with the Master of Illusion:
Tony Montanaro.
DAIELMA SANTOS was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Her training includes studies at the Royal Academy of Dance of London, Michigan University, and with director
Tony Montanaro. In Brazil, Daielma danced with
Studio de Dancas and was principal ballerina with the
