DISCOVERY SUNDAY at La Jolla Playhouse have announced Females in Focus: An Exploration of Women in the Early Years of Film on Sunday, October 12, 2008.

Taking place at the La Jolla Playhouse Department, DISCOVERY SUNDAY will feature Cari Beauchamp, the award winning author of Without Lying Down: Frances Marion and the Powerful Women of Early Hollywood and Babette Mangolte, an experimental filmmaker and professor of film at the University of California, San Diego.

Moderating will be Robert Hughes, the co-owner of San Diego's only independent rock music station 102.1, KPRI. He is also the host of The Late Afternoon Show.

The speakers will discuss major female players during the golden days of Hollywood such as: Francis Marion, Mary Pickford, and Leni Riefenshtahl; and their impact on the film industry.

DISCOVERY SUNDAY is a lecture series that occurs after a select Sunday matinee performance of each show in the season. The event is a casual discussion between a moderator and two chosen speakers. It is conversational and informal. The moderator will ask speakers questions around the given topic for the first part of the event and then open it up to questions from audience members in the second part. The moderated discussion will begin immediately following the matinee performance.

The Third Story is an uplifting comic drama that is composed of three interconnected stories: a realistic tale of a mother and son screenwriting team in the 1940's, a B-movie about the uneasy alliance between a mob queen and a frosty lady scientist and a Russian fairy tale in which a painfully shy Princess makes a dark pact with a mercurial old witch.

This education event is free but best enjoyed after watching the play. You can purchase tickets to The Third Story: By phone at (858) 550-1010, online at www.lajollaplayhouse.org or in person at the box office.
