Urinetown: The Musical is a wicked, irreverent satire that tells an earnest tale of love, greed, and revolution - the story of an urban city plagued by a 20-year drought where water has become so scarce that private toilets are unthinkable. Through the determination of destitute masses, a hero among them rises to lead his fellow citizens in rebellion against the tyrannical corporation holding a monopoly over the town's most private and basic needs. Nominated for 10 Tony Awards, Urinetown won three, for Best Book, Best Score, and Best Direction of a Musical. Fifteen years later, it remains uncomfortably topical.
Director Kari Hayter most recently directed Rock of Ages for Summer Repertory Theatre and Parade at CSU/Northridge. She has worked at South Coast Repertory, Antaeus Theatre Company, and the Chance Theatre and she directed Lysistrata Jones (West Coast premiere), Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and Hairspray for the Chance Theatre, and Chicago, Proof, The Laramie Project and Art for Torrance Theatre Company. Hayter also directed A Streetcar Named Desire, Songs for a New World, The Diary of Anne Frank, Romeo and Juliet, [title of show], 365 Days, Almost Maine, Illyria, Judevine, and RENT at CSU/Fullerton. She is a professor at CSU/Northridge where she teaches musical theatre history and performance.
There will be one preview performance of Urinetown: The Musical on Friday, November 4 at 8pm and opening is set for Saturday, November 5 at 8pm. The regular running schedule is Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8pm through December 3. There will be no performance on Thanksgiving Day and an added performance on Wednesday, November 30 at 8pm.
