The Los Angeles Philharmonic and Music Director Gustavo Dudamel usher in the 2010/11 season with the Celebración: Opening Night Concert and Gala, Thursday, October 7, at Walt Disney Concert Hall. They are joined by renowned Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez, a close friend of Dudamel, in his Walt Disney Concert Hall debut. Together, Dudamel and Flórez developed the special program of bel canto arias and popular Latin American canciones by Rossini, Granda, Lara, Moncayo, Grever, Gutiérrez and Márquez. The 7 p.m. concert is preceded by a reception and followed by dinner and dancing on Grand Avenue. The concert airs on PBS's Great Performances series on Wednesday, December 29, at 9 p.m. (check local listings).
The evening marks the beginning of Dudamel's second season as the LA Phil's Music Director. The 2010/11 promises a great many innovative symphonic experiences including: two composer-focused festivals - Brahms Unbound and Aspects of Adès - a European tour, a return visit from Esa-Pekka Salonen, and the On Location residency of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with
Wynton Marsalis.
Celebración: Opening Night Concert and Gala is being recorded for telecast by Bernhard Fleischer Moving Images, THIRTEEN for WNET.ORG, 3sat and the Los Angeles Philharmonic as part of public television's performing arts series Great Performances. Additionally, the concert is being broadcast live on Classical KUSC FM 91.5, as well as streamed live on NPR.org.
Following the concert, festivities continue on Grand Avenue, closed to traffic for the evening, with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, dinner and dancing, showcased in a raspberry, black and cream setting beneath the Los Angeles skyline and backdrop of
Walt Disney Concert Hall. Acclaimed chef Joachim Splichal of The Patina Group is creating a gourmet dinner for guests to enjoy. The evening is designed by Gai Klass Event Productions.
"This year's Opening Night Gala and Concert and the entire 2010/11 season illustrate Dudamel's powerful influence as we expand in our role as the quintessential 21st-century orchestra," said Los Angeles Philharmonic President Deborah Borda. "We are now in our 92nd season and we continue to stay ahead of the curve in innovative programming and redefining the musical experience, while staying rooted in our grand tradition. This balance provides an enhanced musical experience for our diverse and growing audiences."
All proceeds will support the education programs of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, including YOLA, the signature program of Gustavo Dudamel. A very limited number of Gala package tickets remain, ranging in price from $2,500 to $15,000 including a significant charitable contribution. Please call 213.972.3051 for information.
