LA Phil Announces Neighborhood Concerts

The Los Angeles Philharmonic concludes its 2010/11 series of Neighborhood Concerts with two free performances. LA Phil members Catherine Ransom Karoly (Associate Principal Flute) and Jonathan Karoly (cello) perform a program of works for flute and cello for a Masters in the Chapel concert at the First Lutheran Church of Venice on Sunday, April 10 at 4 p.m. The program includes works by Bach, Debussy, Uebayashi, Glière and Villa-Lobos.

Five LA Phil members - Mitchell Newman, violin; Jin-Shan Dai, violin; Meredith Snow, viola; Barry Gold, cello; and Anne Marie Gabriele, oboe - perform at St. Thomas The Apostle Church in a special chamber concert that features YOLA at HOLA woodwind students. Gabriele, instrumental in facilitating the donation of an oboe to YOLA at HOLA, will be performing alongside the student recipient of her generous gift. The program includes works by Brahms (arranged by Newman), Herrero-Armenteros (arranged by Tarcisio Barrelo), Mozart, Borodin and Romero.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic's neighborhood concerts in the community include free orchestra, chamber music and jazz concerts in churches, community centers and other local venues around Southern California. The Los Angeles Philharmonic has been presenting free neighborhood concerts for the past 19 years, as part of the organization's dedication to making music accessible to the widest possible audience.

Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA):
Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) is the Los Angeles Philharmonic's initiative to provide access to free, high quality instrumental and orchestral education in order to promote youth development. Central to YOLA is the Los Angeles Philharmonic's plan to build, with community partners, youth orchestras in underserved communities throughout Los Angeles. YOLA is inspired by El Sistema, the Venezuelan music education system that nurtured Gustavo Dudamel. El Sistema provides a quarter million children annually with free musical instruments and music instruction so that they may play in youth orchestras throughout their country.

The EXPO Center Youth Orchestra, the first project of YOLA opened in fall 2007, is a partnership between the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Harmony Project, and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. The program is comprised of children ages 2-17 who live within a 5-mile radius of the EXPO Center and represent more than 60 public, charter, and private schools in South LA.

YOLA at HOLA, the second project of YOLA opened in fall 2010, is a partnership between the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Heart of LA, an after-school community center in the Rampart District. In its first year, YOLA at HOLA engaged 100 first and fourth graders who were immersed in instrument instruction, singing/solfège, musicianship, ensembles, and academic tutoring. This season, new first and fourth grade classes will be added as other students continue, leading to the organic development of orchestras at the heart of the program.
