Back by popular demand, LA Opera's fifth season of annual live simulcasts-Opera in the Park and Opera at the Beach-will continue at two locations this year. At 6pm on September 22, 2018, LA Opera's season-opening performance of Giuseppe Verdi's Don Carlo will be transmitted live in high-definition video from nine cameras at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to large LED screens at El Cariso Community Regional Park (13100 Hubbard Street, Sylmar CA 91342) and at Santa Monica Pier (200 Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, 90401). The performance stars Plácido Domingo, the company's Eli and Edythe Broad General Director, as Rodrigo, and will be conducted by James Conlon, LA Opera's Richard Seaver Music Director.

Through the generous support of Los Angeles County and Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, LA Opera is able to present both simulcasts free of charge as a special gift to the community.

This season's Opera at the Beach will mark the fourth consecutive year of simulcasts to the Santa Monica Pier; this will be the first time that Opera in the Park will be experienced by audiences in Sylmar. "Los Angeles County has established a wonderful summer ritual-a live simulcast of the LA Opera-not to be missed," said Supervisor Kuehl, who represents the Third District, which includes both Santa Monica and Sylmar. "This year, witness a world-class LA Opera production of Verdi's Don Carlo with the one and only Plácido Domingo at two beautiful outdoor venues: the Santa Monica Pier and El Cariso Park in Sylmar. Bring a chair and your picnic, and let your soul soar."

Although no tickets are required for entrance, guests are encouraged to sign up in advance at LAOpera.org/OperaInThePark or LAOpera.org/OperaAtTheBeach to get important information about parking and the latest updates, as well as a digital program and a free gift on-site. Seating at both venues is general admission. Attendees are advised to arrive early for pre-performance picnicking, to get the best viewing areas, and to bring their own seating.

One of opera's grandest and greatest works, Don Carlo is an enthralling tale of morality and mortality. When the king of Spain marries a young French princess, the crown prince Don Carlo loses the woman who had captured his heart. Inspired by his heroic best friend, he rebels against his father's tyranny, knowing full well that his fight for freedom might ultimately cost him his life. As Don Carlo, superstar Ramón Vargas returns to Los Angeles for the first time in nearly two decades, with Plácido Domingo as his heroic best friend. Don Carlo is performed in Italian, and the simulcasts will feature subtitles in both English and Spanish.
