Kirk Douglas Theatre presents the world premiere of Lisa Kron's The Wake co-produced with Berkeley Repertory Theatre and directed by Leigh Silverman. Previews begin March 21. The Wake opens March 28 and is set to run through April 18, 2010.
Obie-winning playwright Lisa Kron's new play, "The Wake," centers on Ellen, a smart, politically engaged, freelance writer who has created a warm circle of friends – a "puppy pile of people" – including her longtime partner, his sister and her partner. Convinced that her friends are blind to the ramifications of the political turmoil of the year 2000 and the 21st century, Ellen herself is unable to see the truth at the heart of her own life. Kron's deeply affecting new play unearths the assumptions of privilege and comfort that lie deep in the American character, and confronts the inescapable truth that no matter how intelligent, open or self-reflective you think you are, you'll never be able to see your own blind spot.
