Bay Area Cabaret, now in its 13th season of presenting world-renowned Broadway, pop and jazz vocalists, announces the 2016-2017 season of shows at San Francisco's most elegant and historic showroom, the Fairmont Venetian Room (950 Mason Street atop Nob Hill).
The season kicks off on Friday, September 23, 2016 with an Opening Night Gala celebrating the West Coast concert debut of Tony Award winner Kelli O'Hara (most recently seen on Broadway in The King and I). Her performance is followed on the series by another West Coast debut-the December 4 performance by Tony nominated singer-dancer-actor Tony Yazbeck (On the Town, Smash, Gypsy). January 29, 2017 ushers in the new year with a duo show by Tony nominee Mandy Gonzalez (starred in Lin-Manuel Miranda's In the Heights, Wicked, Madam Secretary) and Telly Leung (Glee,Allegiance), followed by A Cabaret Spectacular, a celebration of the art of cabaret, hosted by "Don't Tell Mama's" Sidney Myer and featuring Amanda McBroom, Nicholas King and an array of the finest cabaret singers from across the nation . Grammy and Tony-winner Billy Porter (Kinky Boots) will close the season on May 14 with his Broadway & Soul show, first performed at Lincoln Center and aired last year on PBS.

Having presented cabaret seasons in a variety of elegant showrooms, the nonprofit Bay Area Cabaret found a permanent home six years ago when it was invited to reopen the Fairmont Hotel's historic Venetian Room, which had been dark as an entertainment venue for over 21 years. Following a gala opening (featuring Oscar, Grammy, Tony, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer
Marvin Hamlisch), the company went on to present such musical legends as
Chita Rivera,
Judy Collins,
Elaine Paige,
Tommy Tune,
Norm Lewis,
Lea Salonga, Alan and
Marilyn Bergman,
Megan Hilty, film star
Peter Gallagher, and the Bay Area Teen Idol competition, with judges from American Idol and Wicked. Having been awarded exclusive music booking rights to the Venetian Room, Bay Area Cabaret has continued to provide top caliber lineups, and now begins its sixth year in residence, to present Bay Area Cabaret's thirteenth season of music.
From 1947 to 1989, the Venetian Room reigned supreme as the city's premier showroom. It was there that
Tony Bennett introduced his signature song, 'I Left My Heart in San Francisco' and show business legends like
Ella Fitzgerald,
Marlene Dietrich,
Tina Turner,
Peggy Lee, Nat 'King' Cole, and many others held forth for more than four decades. "An evening at a Bay Area Cabaret performance at the Venetian Room is a magical and uniquely San Francisco experience," said
Marilyn Levinson, Founding Executive Producer of Bay Area Cabaret. "The rich, musical history of the room is palpable. Patrons are delighted to once again see the nation's top caliber Broadway and jazz artists performing in San Francisco's most glamorous venue." And, for those enjoying the Laurel Court's $47 supper buffet, parking at the hotel is free.
