Jessica Lang Dance (JLD) and Selby Artists Management (SAM) announce today that after the incredible success of the last seven years, Jessica Lang Dance has decided to close on April 30, 2019, which is the end of its 19-city, 2018-19 season. Ms. Lang will continue her creative work as a choreographer, working with companies around the world.
JLD has experienced tremendous success with a repertoire of 25 dances choreographed by Artistic Director and Founder Jessica Lang. JLD has performed for audiences nationally and internationally in over 75 cities, 35 states, and 7 different countries and the creativity will continue through this season: Late in the Fall of 2018 JLD will perform a world premiere of another dance by Lang at the Zellerbach Theatre in Philadelphia. Commenting on the closure, Lang stated: "It has been an honor and deeply rewarding for me to establish a company and to lead its phenomenal growth-in creativity, quality and rigorous touring-for the past seven years. I'm profoundly grateful to our dedicated dancers, board members, staff, donors, presenters, audiences and our agent, Margaret Selby and Selby Artists Mgmt., who made JLD a success."
The dance company's Board of Trustees embraces the closure after what has been an extraordinary run. "It has been a moving and inspirational experience for the Board to be involved with supporting Jessica's choreography and to help her create a company of wonderful dancers. We know she will continue to be successful in sharing her art and vision around the world and we wish her success for the future," remarked JLD Board Chair Geoff Fallon.
Selby Artists Mgmt.'s national and international reach with presenters has greatly contributed to JLD's triumph. Margaret Selby, President of Selby Artists Mgmt. commented, "Jessica Lang Dance will be missed by all of the presenters and audiences who have been fortunate to see the company perform on tour over the past seven years. Together, Jessica Lang, her artistic collaborators, and her brilliant dancers have brought vibrant performances to stages worldwide."
JLD has been presented at premier venues and festivals worldwide including Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, BAM's Next Wave Festival, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, Los Angeles Music Center, TITAS Presents at the Winspear Opera House, Northrop Auditorium, The Joyce Theater, the White Light Festival at Lincoln Center, Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center, Bolshoi's Inversion Festival of Contemporary Dance, and Palacio de Bellas Artes, among many others.
Lincoln Center's White Light Festival presented JLD in Lang's rendition of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater - hailed as "one of the most extraordinary experiences an opera-goer is likely to see... " Her choreographic genius spans the breadth between these classical works to popular music, including her most recent 2018 work This Thing Called Love featuring the music and art of the legendary Tony Bennett. The Los Angeles Times noted, "Lang has a knack for conceiving a complete universe in each dance - distinctive in its look and mood, sound and atmosphere."
