Every January Little Tokyo becomes the center for celebrating the Japanese New Year in Southern California, with the JACCC heading up the festivities with programs that invigorate the spirit and imagination.
The JACCC celebrates the Year of the Rabbit with its signature New Year program, Kotohajime. A visual delight and artistic achievement, the original performance is curated by JACCC Artistic Director Hirokazu Kosaka.
Incorporating the tradtional and contemporary; Japanese and Western culture, the theme for 2011 is Hatsu Dayori, or "First Letters for the New Year."

13th Annual Shikishi Exhibition

JACCC's popular New Year exhibit 13th Annual Shikishi Exhibition is an Open Call for community participation creates this rich display of the collective voice of our diverse community.
Shikishi are Japanese congratulatory cards of standard size, which has been used in Japan since the twelfth century for painting and writing poetry. Today, these shikishi are given as gifts to mark a memorable or special occasion.
This year's colorful exhibition features works by former Prime Ministers of Japan, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, up and coming and established artists, students, seniors, and community members. On opening day, Sunday January 2, viewers will enjoy amazake (sweet sake), mochi sweets and will be able to pull their New Year's fortune from the omikuji box.
Aurora Japanese Culture & Language Program
Aurora Foundation in coordination with the JACCC will offer their Japanese Culture and Language Program bimonthly at the JACCC, on the second Saturday of the month, inviting specialists in each field.
The five-session program is designed to introduce selected aspects of the Japanese culture, and provide information and experience to develop communication strategies and cultural understanding through a collective study of language, culture, and communication.

99 Years of Love: Japanese Americans

The Japanese American Cultural and Community Center presents the miniseries 99 Years of Love: Japanese Americans, supported by TBS 60th Annivesary Mini TV Drama Series, Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles, and The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles.
Over the course of one week, the JACCC will screen all 5 episodes of the epic drama, which portrays the struggles that Japanese Americans faced in a time of prejudice and racism, torn between their country and their ancestor's homeland. Commemorating the 65th Anniversary of the end of WWII, the drama depicts the Issei and Nisei generations' spirit, strength, and love.
1 new episode screened each day. As space is limited reservations are required for screening of entire series. Japanese with English subtitles

The Power of Community Video Contest presented by Nissan aims to provide an opportunity for young Asian American filmmakers and artists to creatively express the important role community can play in strengthening one's ties to culture, family, and physical space, as well as serve as a platform to educate the greater Asian American community about cultural preservation and the impact that a unified, strong community can make.
We are looking for the best 60-second video that visually and creatively completes the phrase "The power of community is...". Videos may be in any genre, and this competition is free and open to anyone. DEADLINE EXTENDED: all entries must be submitted by January 31, 2011.
The 1st place video will recieve $1,000 cash prize and will be shown to hundreds of people at an outdoor film screening in the summer of 2011.
