Irvine Barclay Theatre is presenting its fifth season of the popular theater screenings. The next screening will be Julie Taymor's acclaimed production of A Midsummer Night's Dream on Saturday, August 1.

From the director of The Lion King, Julie Taymor (Frida, The Magic Flute), comes a cinematic experience of the much heralded and sold-out production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream with music by Oscar-winning composer, Elliot Goldenthal (Frida, Heat), cinematography by Rodrigo Prieto (Birdman, Wolf of Wall Street) and stellar performances by David Harewood, Tina Benko, Max Casella and Kathryn Hunter.

This production of Midsummer Night's Dream opened the 2013-14 season of Theatre for a New Audience and was recorded at the Polonsky Shakespeare Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Julie Taymor is the first woman to win the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, as well as a Tony for Best Costumes, for her production of The Lion King. She has directed four major films: Titus, Frida, Across the Universe and most recently, The Tempest. Her opera stagings include Elliot Goldenthal's Grendel and, for the Metropolitan Opera, Die Zauberflöte. At TFANA, she has directed Shakespeare's The Tempest, The Taming of the Shrew, Titus Andronicus and Carlo Gozzi's The Green Bird.

The theater screening series has grown significantly at the Barclay, giving an ever-widening audience an opportunity to see productions that, otherwise, are not likely to be seen in southern California. Three plays screened at the Barclay last season were awarded 2015 Tony awards: The Audience (Helen Mirren, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play; Richard McCabe, Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play); The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (Best Play, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play); Skylight (Best Revival of a Play).
