It's 1977, a time of great economic pain and racial tension in New York City. A city at fever pitch waiting for just the right moment to finally burst. That moment finally arrives when in mid-summer, suddenly, all the lights go out, a rolling blackout affecting a majority of the city. This is where we enter into, I Stop Breathing When You Smile, a world premiere stage play presented by Enfyrian Images. A story of love, power and the destructive influence of both. Opens June 3rd as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival at The Broadwater -1078 Lillian Way, Hollywood, CA 90038
It's the evening of the New York City blackout and the chaos from the streets is about to bubble into the quaint life of two unwitting lovers. When Tessy's night is interrupted by the sudden arrival of her best friend Cass, she is faced with the truth of the events that led him to her. A truth that will alter the directions of both of their lives forever.
Em Hoggett and Umar Malik are producing partners who share a desire to tell stories about real people dealing with extraordinary circumstances. "The human experience is a complicated amalgam of happiness and despair and everything in between," says Malik "and we want to tell stories that not only entertain but also help us understand what it means to be a human."
I Stop Breathing When You Smile leads you into the lives of two friends that have been drawn into the black hole of their own making, pulling themselves deeper and deeper into the cold depths of their own futile existence. I Stop Breathing When You Smile is an exploration of the dark side of love, not just love of another but also the love that you have for yourself, and the consequences it can have.
