Hclab At The Art Of Acting Studio Presents THE TURN OF THE SCREW

The Harold Clurman Laboratory Theater Company has announced a limited engagement of Henry James' classic horror tale The Turn of the Screw in an adaptation by Jeffrey Hatcher. Under the direction of Don K. Williams, the production will feature Sean Spann and Emily Sulzberger playing a total of 10 roles between them. Opening is set for Saturday, September 29, at 8pm.

"The details: a letter, a locket, a riddle, a name. The words are her own - written in her diary in faded ink on the pages of seven days. This is the story she tells. It is a story of terror ... and horror ... and death. It made my very heart - stop." The Turn of the Screw is the tale of a young governess just before the turn of the last century who is tasked with the care of two rather peculiar children at a country estate in England. The governess comes to believe the children are possessed by the previous groundskeeper and governess who have since died

Set design is by Merve Caydere Dobai, lighting design is by Johnny Patrick Yoder, and costume design is by Ovation Award-winner Michael Mullen. The stage manager is Teya Duncan.

Sean Spann - fourth Harold Clurman Lab show. He is the Head of Voice Speech at Art of Acting Studio. He also teaches as an adjunct at Studio School Los Angeles. TV credits include Shameless, Jane the Virgin, The People vs. O.J. Simpson, American Woman, and The Mentalist. LA theatre work includes productions with Circle X Theatre, Coeurage Theatre Company, The Road Theatre, and four seasons at the New Swan Shakespeare Festival.

Emily Sulzberger is a graduate of Wesley Institute in Sydney, Australia and completed a summer conservatory at Stella Adler Art of Acting Studio in 2015. She recently served as assistant director for the Antaeus Theatre Company production of Three Days in the Country. Other acting highlights include The Technicolor Life, Hearts Like Fist, SMASHED, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Main Thing, Blood Wedding, Thunderstorm, and The Cherry Sisters.

Jeffrey Hatcher's many award-winning plays have been performed on Broadway, off-Broadway, across the United States, and abroad. They include Three Viewings, Scotland Road, Neddy, Korczak's Children, A Picasso, Mercy of a Storm, Work Song, and Lucky Duck. Hatcher wrote the book for the Broadway musical Never Gonna Dance. Stage adaptations include Leocadia: To Fool the Eye, Smash, Murder by Poe, and Pierre. He is also the author of The Art and Craft of Playwrighting. Screenplays include Complete Female Stage Beauty, Casanova, Secretary, and Boys Don't Cry.

Don K. Williams - Harold Clurman Lab directing credits include Waiting for Lefty, Long Way Go Down and Lebensraum (both of which received Ovation Award nominations), Muckrakers, Road to Nirvana, and Talking to Terrorists. New York directing credits include Lebensraum, Look Back in Anger, Betrayal, On the Verge, Macbeth, and The Tempest. Playwriting credits include Gun Play, Leap, Democracy, and What Shall I Give My Children. He is the managing artistic director of the Art of Acting Studio and associate artistic director of the Harold Clurman Lab.

The Harold Clurman Laboratory Theater Company is the Stella Adler Studio of Acting/Art of Acting Studio professional theater company. The Lab aims to produce socially relevant theater committed to the standards and ideals set out by Stella Adler, Harold Clurman, and the Group Theater. The Turn of the Screw will play 12 performances only, opening on Saturday, September 29, at 8pm. The running schedule is as follows - Sunday 9/30 at 8pm; Friday 10/5, Saturday 10/6, Monday 10/8, Friday 10/12, and Saturday 10/13 at 8pm; Saturday 10/20 at 8pm; Sunday 10/21 at 7pm; Saturday 10/27 at 8pm; Sunday 10/28 at 7pm; and Halloween, Wednesday 10/31 at 8pm.
