After more than 20 years, director Lee Sankowich proudly returns to Los Angeles' Zephyr Theatre with Deborah Zoe Laufer's critically acclaimed The Last Schwartz. Although, he has owned the Zephyr Theatre since 1978, he hasn't directed a production there since 1986.

Sankowich, who recently directed the Marin Theatre production of The Last Schwartz starring Michael Tucker and Jill Eikenberry, has garnered an impressive cast for Los Angeles that includes Roy Abramsohn, Tim Cummings, Steffany Huckaby, Valerie Perri, Alan Safier, and Pamela Walker.

"The Last Schwartz takes place in the present at the Catskills home of the patriarch of the family who died a year earlier. The remaining family, three brothers, a sister, a wife (who converted to Judaism) of the eldest brother, and the young "starlet" girlfriend of the youngest brother, have gathered from their various homes in New York City and thereabouts for the father's Yarzheit. The humor and fireworks that results from their weekend together is the story of the play with the wife, Bonnie, ultimately revealing a long kept secret that upends the proceedings," explain press notes.

The playwright, Deborah Zoe Laufer, is a graduate of Juilliard's Playwrighting Program. The Last Schwartz had successful runs at Florida Stage, Contemporary Theatre Festival, and Marin. Her new play, End Days, was presented this summer at the O'Neill Playwrights Festival in Conneticut, and given a staged reading at Williamstown. It is scheduled to open at Florida Stage in October.
