Harry Connick Jr, Dolly Parton Set For Hollywood Bowl Summer Series

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association today announces the Hollywood Bowl summer 2011 subscription series for its 90th season at the historic venue. The Hollywood Bowl - named "Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue" by Pollstar magazine for the sixth straight year - is one of the most renowned summer cultural venues in the United States and has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 1922.

The 2011 summer season spans 14 weeks, from June to September. Highlights include the return of Gustavo Dudamel in two weeks of concerts; presentations of classical music by the Los Angeles Philharmonic with conductors Bramwell Tovey, Leonard Slatkin, Lionel Bringuier and more; popular weekend shows with the LA Phil and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra; Jazz at the Bowl concerts including Wynton Marsalis and Gladys Knight; KCRW's World Festival series with Big in Japan, a Global Soul Revue and Serge Gainsbourg Tribute; plus many more artists confirmed for each series throughout the season. The Hollywood Bowl's pop, rock and special presentations bring back annual favorites including the Sing-A-Long Sound of Music; the Grease Sing-A-Long; The Big Picture; the July 4th Fireworks Spectacular, with special guests Daryl Hall & John Oates; and Opening Night, which honors the newest Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame inductees.

New subscriptions for the Hollywood Bowl 2011 summer season are available starting today and the Hollywood Bowl box office opens for single ticket sales on Saturday, May 7, 2011.

LA PHIL MUSIC DIRECTOR GUSTAVO DUDAMEL'S HOLLYWOOD BOWL APPEARANCES

Gustavo Dudamel returns to the Hollywood Bowl- the place where he made his stunning U.S. debut (2005) and led the now legendary ¡Bienvenido Gustavo! community concert (2009) in his first official act as Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic - with five performances featuring internationally acclaimed soloists. DudaMel Begins his summer season appearances with two concerts with celebrated pianist Lang Lang, performing Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3. This program concludes with Dudamel leading the LA Phil in Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's thrilling Pictures at an Exhibition. In his second week, Dudamel shares the stage with renowned violinist Gil Shaham in a performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5. This all-Mozart program also features Mozart's Overture to The Abduction from the Seraglio and Symphony No. 41, "Jupiter." Dudamel celebrates the music of Strauss in a program that also features Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 with violinist Pinchas Zukerman. Gustavo's love of opera is also on display when, in his final appearance at the Hollywood Bowl this season, he leads Puccini's beloved opera Turandot, featuring soprano Christine Brewer.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic performs 10 weeks of exceptional classical programs during the
Hollywood Bowl's Tuesdays and Thursdays series featuring the world's biggest classical stars.

The classical season at the Hollywood Bowl opens with Music Director Gustavo Dudamel in high style with one of the most entertaining pianists of our time, Lang Lang, performing Prokofiev's popular Piano Concerto No. 3. The program also features Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. (July 12 and 14)

Dudamel is joined in a program of all Mozart by his good friend, renowned virtuoso Gil Shaham. The program includes the composer's final symphony. (July 19)

Dudamel plays tribute to Strauss and is joined for Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 by celebrated violinist Pinchas Zukerman. (July 21)

Russian pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk returns to the Bowl following a memorable performance last summer with another Romantic classic, Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto. The program, led by conductor Vasily Petrenko, opens with Dvo?ák's Carnival Overture and also includes Sibelius' Second Symphony. (July 26)

Russian-born and trained Vasily Petrenko, the youngest ever Principal Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, performs Dvo?ák's masterpiece, Symphony No. 9, "New World." LA Phil Principal ConcertMaster Martin Chalifour performs Sibelius' Violin Concerto in a program that also features Glinka's Overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla. (July 28)

The youthful LA Phil Associate Conductor Lionel Bringuier and the firebrand Yuja Wang team for an evening of music that is big, Russian, Romantic, and deeply passionate. Program features Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5. (August 2)

The LA Phil's former Assistant Conductor Joana Carneiro celebrates music of the clarinet with two masters of the instrument - Kari Kriikku and Paul Meyer - and two concertos - by Lindberg and Copland. The program also features Copland's popular Appalachian Spring Suite and Nielsen's Maskarade Overture. (August 4)

Hollywood Bowl favorite Joshua Bell brings all four seasons to summer at the Hollywood Bowl when he leads the LA Phil from the violin in Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Dudamel Fellow Perry So conducts Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings in his Bowl debut. (August 9 and 11)

Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, one of the world's most respected and revered conductors, leads a rare complete performance of Falla's ballet, El amor brujo (Love, the Magician), which contains music of remarkable beauty and originality, including the celebrated Ritual Fire Dance. Burgos closes the evening with Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique. (August 16)

Rarely heard together, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and its close cousin and musical forebear, the Choral Fantasy, share the program for this concert led by Frühbeck de Burgos. (August 18)

Making a welcome return, beloved pianist André Watts performs Liszt's Second Piano Concerto. Leonard Slatkin leads a double dose of Liszt and Ravel in this colorful program. (August 23)

Slatkin continues his week at the Bowl with pianist Olga Kern of whom he states, "She plays with power and assurance, superb technique and musicality, individual flair and passion. The program includes Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and Brahms' Fourth Symphony. (August 25)

Building on the tremendous success of 2009's performance of Koyaanisqatsi, Philip Glass returns with the Philip Glass Ensemble to perform Powaqqatsi: Life in Transformation, Godfrey Reggio's second film in the ground-breaking trilogy, in a world premiere arrangement of the score for the ensemble and orchestra commissioned by the LA Phil. (August 30)

The remarkable French sisters, Katia and Marielle Labèque, bring their vaunted pianistic magic back to the Bowl in a performance of Poulenc's Concerto for Two Pianos. The Philharmonic also performs two works by Falla - Introduction and Dance from La vida breve and The Three-Cornered Hat, Suite No. 2 - as well as Debussy's Ibéria, led by Spanish conductor Juanjo Mena in his Bowl debut. (September 1)

Celebrated musician Itzhak Perlman plays a dual-role as conductor and violin soloist in a full evening of Beethoven, concluding with the triumphany Fifth Symphony. (September 6)

The Thursday Classical series continues with a program led by the witty and charming conductor Bramwell Tovey and presenting Berlioz' Roman Carnival Overture, Saint-Saëns' Piano Concerto No. 2 performed by dazzling young pianist Joyce Yang, Gounod's Faust Ballet Music and Respighi's Pines of Rome. (September 8)

Bramwell Tovey brings the Tuesday Classical series to a climactic conclusion, marking the 10th anniversary of 9/11 with Mozart's choral masterpiece, his Requiem. The program also includes Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. (September 13)

Three fresh faces join conductor Nicholas McGegan for Beethoven's Triple Concerto - violinist Jennifer Koh, cellist Christian Poltéra, and pianist Sergio Tiempo. Also on the program are Rossini's Overture to La Cenerentola, Haydn's Symphony No. 94 ("Surprise") and Handel's exhilarating Royal Fireworks Music to close. (September 15)

WEEKEND SPECTACULARS
FRIDAYS AND SATURDAYS, 8:30 PM
The Hollywood Bowl's Weekend Spectaculars series offers audiences the quintessential summer concert-going experience, and include 10 concerts ending with the dazzling pyrotechnics that have become a Hollywood Bowl tradition.

Sarah McLachlan - In her first-ever performance with orchestra, multi-Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan makes her Hollywood Bowl debut with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, led by Thomas Wilkins. With more than 40 million records sold, McLachlan celebrates her recent release, Laws of Illusion. (July 15 and 16)

Dolly Parton - The Queen of Country Music makes her Hollywood Bowl debut in a concert celebrating her new record as well as over 45 years of hit songs. The concert features Parton's classic voice and multi-instrumental artistry for an all-Dolly evening. (July 22 and 23)

Michael Feinstein and the Singing Stars of Television - Michael Feinstein joins the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a parade of classic and popular songs from the Great American Songbook - from Gershwin and Berlin to New Orleans jazz and Broadway musicals. Television star favorites, including Florence Henderson, Cheyenne Jackson, Dick Van Dyke, Vanessa Williams and others, join in the performance. (July 29 and 30)

Hairspray - The Hollywood Bowl's annual fully-staged Broadway musical takes a trip down the musical lane of 1962 Baltimore with the 2003 winner of eight Tony Awards, Hairspray, the doo-wop inflected story of big dreams and big voices, based on the classic film by John Waters. (August 5 and 6)

En Fuego: Voices and Guitars - Rodrigo y Gabriela, Mujeres de Agua featuring Javier Limon and Buika - In a celebration of the passion and rhythm of the guitar, this concert brings the Los Angeles Philharmonic together with the illustrious Mexican duo Rodrigo y Gabriela along with Spanish songstress Buika and flamenco singer/songwriter Javier Limón. (August 12 and 13)

Walt Disney's Fantasia - Nearly 75 years ago, Walt Disney used the skill of his world-class animators to visualize the world of classical music. The result: Walt Disney's Fantasia. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of our very own Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, John Mauceri returns to the Bowl to recreate this magic - an evening of selections from the classic film with clips on the Bowl's big screen. You'll see your favorites, plus a glimpse into the brilliant artwork and unfinished segments of the Disney masterpiece. The evening ends with fireworks that complement the spectacular beauty of this cinematic triumph. (August 19 and 20)

John Williams: Maestro of the Movies - Five-time Academy Award-winner and renowned composer John Williams returns for his annual weekend at the Bowl, with a program of great film music that is guaranteed to delight, amaze, and entertain. In the three decades since his Bowl debut, Williams has written countless beloved film scores including some of Hollywood's most recognized and memorable themes. (August 26 and 27)

Tchaikovsky Spectacular - Charismatic conductor Bramwell Tovey returns to lead the LA Phil's annual Tchaikovsky Spectacular featuring the Russian composer's Romeo and Juliet, Rococo Variations, Music from Act IV of Swan Lake and the 1812 Overture, complete with cannons and pyrotechnics to light up the sky. (September 9 and 10)

Fireworks Finale: A Night at the Moulin Rouge - An exhilarating celebration of the City of Lights with high-kicking dancers direct from the legendary Moulin Rouge, and the jazzy French cabaret sounds of Paris Combo, are accompanied by a Thomas Wilkins-led Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and a spectacular fireworks display. (September 16 and 17)

The Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra offer Sunday Sunset Performances, a series of concerts across the musical spectrum from opera to Broadway.

Turandot - Turandot, Puccini's extravagant portrayal of a legendary princess in China, comes to the Hollywood Bowl. Christine Brewer stars as the icy princess who challenges suitors to a game of riddles to win her heart. This story of love features some of the most beloved arias of all time, led by LA Phil Music Director Gustavo Dudamel. (July 17)

Carolyn and Bill Powers Creative Chair for Jazz, Herbie Hancock, presents his second jazz series at the Hollywood Bowl with eight concerts celebrating influential jazz pioneers with a blend of jazz, soul, blues, Latin and African music, sure to please jazz purists and novices alike.

"For my second season as Creative Chair for Jazz we are presenting extraordinary work from jazz artists everyone loves, highlighting the multiple facets of the genre. The Hollywood Bowl is one of the coolest spots in LA during the summer and I am proud to be able to invite my greatest friends from the jazz world and beyond to play this impressive venue," said Hancock.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis kicks off the Hollywood Bowl 2011 jazz series, delivering a night of big band at its finest. South African trumpeter, singer and composer Hugh Masekela opens this upbeat evening. (June 22)

Grammy-winning jazz/pop trumpeter Chris Botti returns to the Bowl for a night of cool standards and romantic instrumentals. Vocal virtuoso Bobby McFerrin and friends Yellowjackets collaborate to create mesmerizing and beguiling rhythm and jazz. (July 13)

Multiple Grammy-winner Gladys Knight brings her beloved voice back to the Bowl for a little jazz, a little R&B and an abundance of soul. Additional artist to be announced. (July 27)

Soulful bluesman and guitarist Robert Cray, living link to the Delta Blues Keb' Mo' and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer/vocalist Mavis Staples come together to rock the Bowl with the very best in blues music today. (August 10)

Wayne Shorter, Cassandra Wilson, special guests
Joni Mitchell has crafted an extraordinary body of work that spans more than 40 years, including an impressive jazz catalog. This evening, led by drummer/music director Brian Blade, is a tribute to her daring jazz recordings - including a complete performance of her 1975 masterpiece The Hissing of Summer Lawns - with all-star special guest singers and musicians. · George Benson
George Duke/Marcus Miller/David Sanborn
The ultimate guitarist, with a career that has spanned nearly six decades, Benson is the master of taste, speed and swing. With his warm tone and silky vocals, his shows are filled with classic hits and a few jazz surprises. All stars in their own right, the Duke/Miller/Sanborn project opens the evening with smooth jazz verve. (August 31)

· Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club® featuring Omara Portundo
Ninety Miles featuring Stefon Harris, David Sanchez, Christian Scott
Scorching traditional rhythms, infectious improvisations and nostalgic torch songs are all celebrated in this special Cuban-themed evening headlined by Orquesta Beuna Vista Social Club, and the dazzling vocals of Portuondo. Exciting and up and coming trumPeter Scott explores new Cuban jazz with his Ninety Miles project. Additional artists to be announced. (August 24)
This concert is in cooperation with the Getty Museum's historic photographs exhibit, A Revolutionary Project: Cuba from Walker Evans to Now, May 17 - October 2, 2011 at the Getty Center.

The Hollywood Bowl 2011 jazz series culminates in a fantastic finale with producer, composer, and arranger Quincy Jones in a rare live concert appearance. The evening promises to be a historic voyage through his illustrious six-decade career. Additional artists to be announced. (September 7)

KCRW's WORLD FESTIVAL
SUNDAYS, 7 PM
KCRW's World Festival celebrates its 13th season with one-of-a-kind programs showcasing sounds from around the globe. Created in partnership with KCRW, the six Sunday programs highlight established and rising artists from diverse backgrounds.

· Big In Japan - Yellow Magic Orchestra, Cibo Matto plus additional artists to be announced - A gathering of the biggest names in Japanese pop music, this once-in-a-lifetime concert spans genres and generations. Iconic Japanese electro-pop pioneers Yellow Magic Orchestra (with original members Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi) return for their first show in L.A. since 1979; and after 10 years, Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori reunite Cibo Matto for this special night, which will also feature traditional kabuki dance and experimental contemporary visuals for an unforgettable evening celebrating Japan. · Rickey Minor's Global Soul Revue -Special guests Ceci Bastida, Rocky Dawuni and Stevie Wonder; Rickey Minor, music director; plus additional artists to be announced - From Alabama to Africa, soul music unites cultures, genres and generations. Rickey Minor (The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, American Idol) guides audiences on a global soul celebration featuring artists from around the world. (July 24)

· Reggae Night X - Tuff Gong Worldwide & Ziggy Marley Salute Legends of Reggae - Toots Hibbert, Mighty Diamonds, special guests; additional guest artists to be announced - Celebrating the 10th year of Reggae at the Bowl, Ziggy Marley brings his band and a host of all-star roots reggae legends for a unique, not to be missed event. (July 31)

· Serge Gainsbourg Tribute with Jean Claude Vannier - Hollywood Bowl Orchestra; Special guest vocalists Beck, China Forbes, Sean Lennon, Charlotte Kemp Muhl (The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger), and more to be announced - The provocative and mystical music of the late French superstar Serge Gainsbourg is brought to life. Led by Jean Claude Vannier, French composer, arranger and longtime Gainsbourg collaborator, the legendary concept albums Histoire de Melody Nelson and L'enfant assassin des mouches will be performed in full with orchestra and guests, plus more Gainsbourg classics throughout the evening. Opening Night at the Bowl
The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, led by Thomas Wilkins, kicks off the summer season with the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame concert, now in its 12th year. The Bowl's star-studded and always memorable Opening Night is one of the most anticipated highlights of the season. Harry Connick Jr. (and other legendary inductees to be announced) will be honored during this year's festivities. Proceeds benefit Music Matters, supporting the LA Phil's education programs. Festival of Music and Art at the Hollywood Bowl

The Hollywood Bowl celebrates its 44th year of presenting one of the most popular children's festivals in Southern California. The six-week festival of music and arts for children ages 3 to 11 takes place weekday mornings. Beginning on (Tuesday, July 5), and running until (Friday, August 12), with two performances each Monday thru Friday at 10am and 11:15am, SummerSounds explores world music through creative programs that introduce music and other traditions from different cultures. EMBRACING THE LATEST TECHNOLOGIES

Through the use of the latest technologies, the LA Phil provides innovative ways for music lovers to enhance their concert-going experience. The LA Phil provides a state-of-the-art website and mobile site as well as profiles on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, giving fans an opportunity to connect directly with the LA Phil, Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and the artists who perform at these iconic venues. In 2009, the LA Phil released the "Hollywood Bowl" application - the first venue application of its kind - offering detailed concert information, the ability to purchase tickets, GPS-enabled, turn-by-turn directions to the venue, seating charts, concession options, parking information and more. The app was an iTunes "Pick of the Week." Also, in 2009, the LA Phil launched the "Bravo Gustavo" online game and application, which was featured in Time magazine's "Short List." In 2010, the LA Phil launched the "LA Phil" application for Android, Blackberry, iPhone and the mobile web and it was immediately featured in the Blackberry App Store. Much like the "Hollywood Bowl" app, the "LA Phil" app acts as a personal guide to Walt Disney Concert Hall, offering detailed concert information, an interactive orchestra map, program notes, performer biographies, composer histories, photos, the ability to purchase tickets, and on-demand videos of Upbeat Live pre-concert talks.

THE BOWL WALK
Developed as part of the renovations in the 2004 Hollywood Bowl Shell Project, The Bowl Walk is a 10-station exhibit around the grounds of the Hollywood Bowl, a Los Angeles County Park, which beckons visitors to view the venue outside and around the theater. The exhibit features visual displays throughout the park, presenting information on the cultural events, history and architecture of the legendary natural amphitheater. The Walk begins at the entrance of the Bowl (on Peppertree Lane) and concludes inside the theater on the Fourth Promenade at the top of the hill.

Ten photographic displays along the pedestrian walkways guide visitors through the park: The Muse of Music, Peppertree Lane, Pop & Rock at the Hollywood Bowl, Great Performances, The Shell, The Amphitheater, The Cahuenga Pass Treasure, Flora & Fauna of the Hollywood Bowl, Picnics & Fireworks, and The View from the Fourth Prom. An accessible sign fixed in the plaza area, near the Box Office and Bowl Store, includes Walk information for patrons with disabilities. The exhibit design is by Hodgetts & Fung.

PARK & RIDE AND SHUTTLE SERVICE
Leave the car behind as well as the traffic with these two convenient and affordable transportation services offered by the Bowl. Park & Ride ($5-$8) service will be available from 14 convenient locations in the Southland during the Hollywood Bowl 2010 season. Shuttle lots ($4) offer convenient parking at three close-to-the-Bowl locations.
