The UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television (UCLA TFT), one of the world's most prominent academic institutions for entertainment and performing arts education, announced today that distinguished costume designer Paul Tazewell will be the keynote speaker at the 16th annual Design Showcase West (DSW) on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television's Freud Playhouse.
Tazewell has been designing costumes for Broadway and regional theater, film and television, dance, and opera productions for more than 25 years. In 2016, he received a Tony Award for his costume designs for the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton and an Emmy Award for his work on NBC's The Wiz! Live. Starting his Broadway career with the groundbreaking musical Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk, he has since worked on the original Broadway productions of Hamilton, In the Heights; The Color Purple; Doctor Zhivago; Memphis; Caroline, or Change; Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam; A Streetcar Named Desire; Jesus Christ Superstar; Guys and Dolls and A Raisin in the Sun, among others. Recent TV projects include HBO's The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and NBC's Jesus Christ Superstar Live. Tazewell has designed for renown companies such as The Metropolitan Opera, Bolshoi Ballet, English National Opera, Théâtre du Châtelet, The Public Theater, The National Theatre and The Kennedy Center, among many others. He is the recipient of two Lucille Lortel Awards, four Helen Hayes Awards, a Princess Grace Foundation Fellowship and The Princess Grace Statue Award. Tazewell received his B.F.A. from North Carolina School of the Arts and his M.F.A. from New York University.

Design Showcase West, created by UCLA TFT, is the only national entertainment design showcase on the West Coast featuring the work of students graduating from the nation's top university design programs, including UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television; California State University, Long Beach; Northwestern University; Purdue University; San Diego State University; Southern Methodist University; University of California, Davis; University of Cincinnati; University of Georgia; University of Missouri - Kansas City; University of Texas at Austin; University of Washington and Yale University. Exhibits range from costume to scenic, sound, lighting and production design. Studio executives, film and television producers, theater artistic directors and professional designers attend DSW to meet the industry's fresh rising stars.
Past speakers have included production designer Deborah Riley (Game of Thrones) in 2017; filmmaker Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained) in 2016; producer Bill Prady (The Big Bang Theory) in 2015; and costume designer Ellen Mirojnick (The Knick) in 2014.
DSW is presented by the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television's Department of Theater.
