By popular demand, the Hollywood Bowl is once again transformed into the world's largest movie theater for the Grease Sing-A-Long Sunday, July 13, 2014. The show, hosted by Didi Conn ("Frenchy"), will feature the Paramount Pictures film, complete with subtitles so the whole audience can sing along.
For the pre-show, rock 'n roll doo-wop legends Sha Na Na will perform a live set starting at 7:30 PM, followed by a short audience warm-up led by Ms. Conn, with the film starting at 8:30 PM. Sha Na Na, cast in the movie as "Johnny Casino and the Gamblers," performed six songs on the Grease soundtrack and the song "Sandy," sung by John Travolta, was co-written by Sha Na Na's piano man Screamin' Scott Simon.
Now a Hollywood Bowl tradition, this family-friendly event will coincide with the 36th anniversary of Grease, the highest grossing musical film of all-time. Directed by Randal Kleiser and based on Jim Jacobs' and Warren Casey's musical of the same name, Grease was released in 1978 by Paramount Pictures to tremendous critical and popular acclaim. The film was nominated for five Golden Globes and an Oscar, and was the winner of the People's Choice Award for Best Musical. Grease stars John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway, and Didi Conn.
Actress and comedienne Didi Conn is best known for her starring role as "Frenchy," the beauty-school dropout in the films Grease and Grease 2. Last year, she commemorated the 35th anniversary of Grease by writing "Frenchy's Grease Scrapbook: We'll Always Be Together," which was published by Hyperion. She also starred in the films You Light Up My Life, The Magic Show, and Almost Summer, and was the voice of "Raggedy Ann" in the animated musical, The Adventures of Raggedy Ann and Andy. She played the title role in the Academy Award-winning short film, Violet. On television, Conn was a regular on The Practice with Danny Thomas, and played for three seasons on the hit series Benson. She is loved by children of all ages for her 10-year run as "Station Mistress Stacy Jones" on the award-winning PBS series Shining Time Station. Conn can be seen in the feature film Thomas and the Magic Railroad, starring Alec Baldwin, and in Frida, Shooting Vegetarians, Helen At Risk, Oh Baby!, and Paper Dreams.
Sha Na Na combined their love for the classics of rock & roll with a dynamic theatrical approach as fellow college students at Columbia University in New York in 1969. The '50s music legends appeared just before Jimi Hendrix 45 years ago at the original Woodstock Festival in their eighth professional gig. Of course the check bounced, but they agreed to be in the Woodstock documentary for one dollar. In addition to co-starring in the movie Grease as "Johnny Casino and the Gamblers," they had four seasons of their own worldwide television series, The Sha Na Na Show. Their latest release SHA NA NA - Greaser High School Hop, features twenty-five signature '50s and '60s songs including "The Bop," "The Twist," "The Stroll," "The Hand Jive," "The Monkey," "The Jerk," "The Cha Cha," and even "The Hokey Pokey."
