Foothill Music Theatre cracks the case with its summer production of CURTAINS, the hilarious musical whodunit. With music and lyrics by the immortal John Kander and Fred Ebb (Chicago, Cabaret) and book by Rupert Holmes, CURTAINS was nominated for eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score. It will be presented by multi-award winning Foothill Music Theatre, July 21 -August 14 at the Lohman Theatre in Los Altos under the skilled direction of Jay Manley. For tickets ($13-$26) and information, the public may visit www.foothillmusicals.com or phone the box office at (650) 949-7360.
Based on an original book and concept by
Peter Stone, CURTAINS opens with a flop - a doomed premier of the musical, Robbin' Hood of the Old West, which reaps a cool reception from critics. Shortly after curtain call, the desperately untalented leading lady, Jessica Cranshaw, succumbs to a mysterious poisoning. Eagerly on the case, closet theatre nut Lt. Cioffi must unravel the clues and, despite lethal setbacks, fix this toxic production. Could the culprit be the hard-edged lady producer, one of the recently divorced songwriting team, or the seemingly sweet ingénue? And how about re-writing that last number? It's all up to the detective in this lively, laugh-filled mystery.
After its world premiere in 2006 at the
Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, CURTAINS ran on Broadway from March 2007 to June 2008, earning
David Hyde Pierce a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. In addition to a Tony Award nomination for Best Book, writers
Rupert Holmes and
Peter Stone were awarded the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical.
For Foothill Music Theatre's production, director Jay Manley has assembled a skilled cast of Bay Area performers including
Ryan Drummond as "Lt. Cioffi," as well as Katie Blodgett,
Doug Brees, Joe Colletti, Jordan Kersten, Jaime Martinez, Walter Mayes, Shane Olbourne, Reggie Reynolds,
Michael Rhone, Tyler Risk, Gary Stanford, Alicia Teeter, and Todd Wright, and a large ensemble of supporting players.
Dottie Lester-White will provide choreography, with costumes by Janis Bergmann, and sets by Joe Ragey.
Under the artistic direction of Jay Manley, Foothill Music Theatre has won Bay Area Theatre Critics' Circle Awards for Outstanding Production, Outstanding Ensemble Production, and Best Direction, among many others. The company has also garnered numerous Dean Goodman Choice Awards, awards from Los Angeles-based Drama-Logue, and kudos from myriad Bay Area critics for its sharp, handsomely mounted productions of The Producers, Annie Get Your Gun, Brigadoon, Ragtime, Sweeney Todd, Guys and Dolls, Showboat, West Side Story, Carousel, and other classic musicals.
WHAT: Justice will be served with a side of laughter as Foothill Music Theatre catches the killer in this summer's production, "CURTAINS." Set in 1959 Boston, Lieutenant Frank Cioffi, a detective with a secret affinity for musical theatre, investigates the murder of a theatre company's tremendously untalented star on opening night. Could the culprit be the hard-edged lady producer, one of the recently divorced songwriting team, or the seemingly sweet ingénue? Lt. Cioffi is on the case-he may even have to question the ingénue twice. This backstage romp features music and lyrics by the immortal Kander and Ebb (Chicago, Cabaret) and was nominated for eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score.
