The Serge Gainsbourg Tribute concert at the Hollywood Bowl brings to life the provocative music of the late superstar Serge Gainsbourg on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. The evening marks the 20th anniversary of the death of the French icon, and will feature a range of Gainsbourg songs picked from his vast repertoire. The show will close with French composer and Gainsbourg collaborator Jean Claude Vannier conducting the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, choir, and special guests in a full performance of the famed concept album, Histoire de Melody Nelson, to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Special guest vocalists Beck, Sean Lennon, Charlotte Kemp Muhl, Ed Droste, Victoria Legrand, Mike Patton, Zola Jesus, and Lulu Gainsbourg join in this tribute performing Gainsbourg classics throughout the evening. KCRW's Anne Litt is the host, and dublub DJ (and Francophile) Daedelus will open the evening.
Parisian singer/songwriter Serge Gainsbourg has been touted as a musical and lyrical genius with an eclectic repertoire from jazz to pop to reggae. In his lifetime, Gainsbourg collaborated with some of Europe's finest female singers, from Jane Birkin to Brigitte Bardot, to produce commercial hits like "Je t'aime...moi non plus" and "Bonnie & Clyde."
