A unique offering of musician Don McLean's handwritten lyrics to his best-selling song American Pie will be auctioned by Nate D. Sanders Auctions on January 26, 2017.
There are only four copies of McLean's handwritten lyrics of American Pie. This is the second copy to be offered to the public after the original draft sold in 2015 for $1.2 million to a private collector. A second copy is owned by the Harvard University library. A third copy was given by McLean as a confidential personal gift to a close friend.
The lyrics being auctioned are written by McLean on eight separate sheets of his personal stationery, which features the gold "thumbs up" American Pie album art. The lyrics are written in blue ink and signed by McLean.
McLean recorded and released his single American Pie for the album American Pie in 1971. The song was the number one hit in the United States for four weeks in 1972. Even though the song was released "A long, long, time ago...," the Recording Industry of America named American Pie the 5th greatest song of the 20th century, 30 years later in 2001.
Bidding for the lyrics begins at $100,000.
