Disney's THE LION KING continues to reign across North America with a sold-out engagement in Los Angeles, which concluded on Sunday, January 12 at The Hollywood Pantages. The triumphant eight-week return grossed over $15.2 million at the box office and entertained more than 172,000 patrons during 66 performances. The award-winning musical returned to Los Angeles following an eight-week sold-out run in 2006.
It is estimated that the Los Angeles engagement of THE LION KING generated a $63 million economic benefit to the city from travel, hotels, restaurants, parking and other businesses patronized by both theatergoers and production staff. This figure is based upon a Touring Broadway League report which found that, on average, Broadway tours contribute an economic impact 4.17 times the gross ticket sales to the local metropolitan area's economy.
Martin Wiviott, General Manager for Nederlander's Hollywood Pantages said, "We are always so pleased to have Disney's THE LION KING come home to the Pantages. I remember the thrill and excitement sitting in the audience during its first engagement here in 2000. And now, 13 years later, we have just concluded the third sold-out engagement, and it is every bit as glorious and joyful as that opening night many years ago. Many thanks to our friends and neighbors at Disney Theatrical, and to the entire cast and crew for spending their holidays with us, and we look forward to the "Circle of Life" bringing you back home again soon."
"After a seven year absence, we were thrilled to return to Los Angeles and the historic Hollywood Pantages, where THE LION KING has always been so warmly embraced," said Jack Eldon, Vice President, Domestic, Disney Theatrical Productions. "It is incredible to reflect that the community's response to THE LION KING was just as strong as the production's previous two engagements in Los Angeles and we look forward to returning in the near future."
The North American touring productions of THE LION KING have been seen by more than 15 million theatergoers and grossed over $1 billion to date. After 11 years on the road, THE LION KING continues to play to standing room only houses throughout North America. The current schedule is listed below.
