The Disney Symphonic Legacy, featuring the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra led by its Founding Director, John Mauceri, premieres at Walt Disney Concert Hall on October 20, 2009 at 8:00PM. For the first time in Walt Disney Concert Hall's history an entire program is being devoted to music from Disney films. Included is the world premiere concert performance of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - A Symphonic Retelling, featuring a full cast and the world symphonic premieres of Danny Elfman's The Nightmare Before Christmas - Concert Overture and Hans Zimmer's Pirates of the Caribbean - A Symphonic Portrait. The Disney Symphonic Legacy also sees John Mauceri make his conducting debut at Walt Disney Concert Hall with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.
Curated and conducted by
John Mauceri, The Disney Symphonic Legacy celebrates the connection between the inspiration of music and the heritage of
Walt Disney's legendary films. Beginning with Elfman's Concert Overture from The Nightmare Before Christmas, the program continues with a Suite from the Disney classic, Sleeping Beauty, with music by Tchaikovsky. A Symphonic Portrait from Zimmer's Pirates of the Caribbean and a Suite from
Hans Zimmer and
Elton John's The Lion King follow.
After intermission, audiences will witness the world concert premiere of
Frank Churchill and
Larry Morey's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - A Symphonic Retelling. Reinventing the "radio play" of the past, the concert will explore a never-before-seen (or heard) approach to the classic animated film, including live narration and vocals, along with edits of the original orchestrations from the film's famous songs and underscoring. Directed by
Jeff Lee, the performance features a talented cast of soloists, including
Ashley Brown (Snow White), currently starring in the North American tour of MARY POPPINS, Blake Griffin (The Prince) and
Ruth Williamson (The Queen), as well as the Seven Dwarfs and the Cal State Fullerton University Singers. In a setting appropriate for the entire family, the reading will be fun, casual and light-hearted - and will shed a completely new light on one of Disney's most famous classics.
