The Covina Center for the Performing Arts is proud to present Godspell, a musical adaptation of the story of love and betrayal taken from the life of Jesus and his disciples as told in the Gospels of Mathew and Luke.
Broadway veteran playwright and director John-Michael Tebelak created Godspell in 1971. Music with lyrics from traditional hymns as well as Biblical verse were written by Stephen Schwartz (the composer of such musicals as Wicked and Pippin) borrowing styles from pop, folk rock, vaudeville, and gospel. The structure of Godspell is a series of sketches in which Jesus, armed with charm and wit, teaches the parables to a company of street urchins who are stand-ins for all of humanity in mime, magic, and no small amount of clowning. Godspell is suitable for all ages.
The Covina Center for the Performing Arts production of Godspell will be directed by veteran Southern California director Larry Watts. The CCPA production will be the 2001 revival version of the 1971 Broadway original. The revival has updated orchestrations, and Watts has moved the musical in a contemporary setting, rather than the "flower children and hippie" setting of the original.
Godspell will run from June 26-August 2
All seats $34.00
