Up-and-coming playwrights Yaakov Bressler and Robert Keller tackle mental illness, sexual identity, and self-direction in a new comedy.
An industry reading of Jung & Crazy will take place on Friday, June 29 at 7 PM at the Davidson/Valentini Theatre of the Los Angeles LGBT Center (1125 McCadden Place, Los Angeles, CA 90038).
The cast will feature Collette Wolfe (Interstellar), Brad Griffith (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Kirstin Kluver (Transparent), Burt Grinstead (Famous in Love), Mara McCaffray (The Young and the Restless), Marc Latham (The Groundlings), and co-playwright Robert Keller (Beauty and the Beast). Christopher Erlendson will be directing.
Erlendson was drawn to this play "because of how it depicts the journey of diving into the dark and uncovering those issues which are painful for us to examine." Although decidedly comedic-with many wild, farcical moments, in the vein of Blithe Spirit-the play packs a whopping emotional punch. "In following the characters in this story, we find it is through self-acceptance that we may achieve authenticity; it is through vulnerability that we may achieve true healing," says Erlendson.
Jung & Crazy is a new comedy about dealing with anxiety and love-with a little help from the ghost of Carl Jung. When Samantha shows up unannounced at the office of her new psychiatrist complaining of severe anxiety, she doesn't realize her doctor's life is quickly unraveling-a situation only made worse when he unwittingly awakens the ghost of his hero, Carl Jung. As Samantha's secrets are revealed, however, doctor and patient begin to switch roles, leading to unexpected breakthroughs for both of them.
