The 1% confronts the 99%...in turn of the century Russia. An aristocratic Russian family down on their luck is shocked when a former servant, who has done well in the world, returns and offers to buy their property. Power roles are reversed and the world is turned upside down as the family faces the new reality.

The City Shakespeare Company of Santa Monica (City Shakes) is proud to present an Emerging Director production of Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. Based on a recent translation by the renowned late UCLA professor Michael Henry Heim, this new production is extremely relevant as the United States today confronts a new economic reality. Recent UCLA Theater, Film and Television graduate, Mallin Alter, makes her directorial debut in what distinguished Russian literature scholar and Dramaturg, Boris Dralyuk describes as "a new and fresh interpretation of Chekhov's subtle masterpiece." A young and dynamic cast makes this production of a timeless classic resonate today.
