Chromolume Theatre at the Attic has announced the first production of its 2018 Season of Musicals, Dessa Rose. With book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty, opening is set for Friday, February 2 at 8pm. The run will continue through February 25 only. The Chromolume's production of Dessa Rose will feature musical direction by Daniel Yokomizo, choreography by Michael Marchak, and it will be directed by James Esposito.
The cast (in alphabetical order) is Mykell Barlow, Ambrey Benson, Margaret Berkowitz, Claire Buchignani, Abby Carlson, Matt Mancuso, Bretten M. Popiel, Ken Maurice Purnell, Mikhail Roberts, Kymberly Stewart, Shaunte Tabb, and Bradley Turner. Scenic design is by James Esposito, lighting design is by Jesse Baldridge, and costume design is by Kara McLeod. The stage manager is Jasmine Moreno.
Dessa Rose is based on the book of the same name by Sherley Anne Williams (1986). The show received its New York premiere at Lincoln Center in 2005. With book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty, it tells the story of a young black woman (a runaway slave) and a young white woman (an abandoned mother) and their journey to acceptance in the antebellum South, as they tell their story to their grandchildren.
Dessa Rose opens on Friday, February 2 at 8pm. The regular performance schedule is Friday and Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm & 7pm through February 25.
